\nDe Salta<\/b>, \u00e0 l\u2019ouest de l\u2019Argentine, \u00e0 Santiago de Chile<\/b>, en passant par Mendoza<\/b>, nous traversons les r\u00e9gions \u0153nologiques de ces deux pays.
\nDurant ce dernier mois, nous voyons une alternance de paysages montagneux, c\u00f4tiers et viticoles.
\nNous y rencontrons aussi des connaissances et d\u00e9couvrons \u00e9galement, de cave en cave, d\u2019excellents vins.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wine and Dine in Argentina and Chile<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Undisputable the best wine in South America comes from the area between Salta<\/b> and Mendoza<\/b> in Argentina<\/b> and from the area around Santiago<\/b> in Chile<\/b>. In addition to excellent wine and food, in the past Month we discovered a stunning landscape, which fluctuates from desert and impressive rock formations to lush vineyards, fruit and vegetable plantations. <\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Enjoy the pictures and why not get inspired to taste some of the vines we discovered (see list at the end of the article)!
\nMost of them you can also buy in Europe, we were told.<\/span><\/i><\/span>
\n Pour descendre de Salta<\/b> en direction de Mendoza<\/b>, nous choisissons de prendre une petite route qui serpente \u00e0 travers la montagne et nous fait d\u00e9couvrir de charmants petits villages.
\nCachi<\/b> est l\u2019un des premiers rencontr\u00e9s.
\nPetit village tr\u00e8s pittoresque, distant de 150 km de Salta, sur la ruta 40 \u00e0 2280 m\/mer.
\nPour l\u2019atteindre, nous devons traverser la Questa del Obispo<\/b> et passer un col \u00e0 3400 m\/mer.
\nLe paysage \u00e0 travers les montagnes de roches ocre est magnifique.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is beginning of November and we are now heading from Salta (north-west\u00a0Argentina) direction south to Mendoza via several national Parks, lovely villages and impressive Bodegas. Spring has come to this area and not only the mighty Candelabra cactuses are flowering.<\/span>
\n Funny to hear at the same time that the first snow has come to Switzerland. In addition, Christmas decoration starts to show in many shops here. And this at temperatures around 30\u00b0C.<\/span><\/p>\n

De l\u00e0, la route longe le \u00ab\u00a0Parque Nacional Los Cardones<\/b>\u00a0\u00bb et c\u2019est donc au milieu de nombreux cactus cand\u00e9labres pouvant atteindre 8 m\u00e8tres de hauteur que nous \u00e9voluons.
\nDe plus, la nature nous offre leurs fleurs en cadeau. M<\/span>ight candelabre cacti\u00a0along our road:<\/span><\/em>\u00a0

Nous arrivons bient\u00f4t \u00e0 Molinos<\/b>, autre village pittoresque, et de l\u00e0, prenons la piste qui nous m\u00e8ne \u00e0 Colom\u00e9<\/b>.
\nColom\u00e9<\/b> et un domaine viticole cr\u00e9\u00e9 en 1831 par les Espagnols dont la femme du gouverneur avait import\u00e9 des plants de vigne de la r\u00e9gion de Bordeaux.
\nLe domaine a \u00e9t\u00e9 rachet\u00e9 par un Suisse du nom de Hess en 2001 qui l\u2019a compl\u00e8tement reconstruit et en a fait un outil de production tr\u00e8s moderne, produisant 1 million de litres de vin de qualit\u00e9 biologique.
\nIl a \u00e9galement b\u00e2tit une \u00e9glise et une \u00e9cole pour les habitants de la r\u00e9gion.
\nLe vin produit est principalement du Malbec mais aussi du Cabernet Sauvignon et m\u00eame un blanc, le Torront\u00e9s<\/b>, c\u00e9page qui n\u2019existe que dans la r\u00e9gion de Salta<\/b>.
\nLa situation particuli\u00e8re du domaine, loin de toute activit\u00e9 humaine, permet de cultiver la vigne sans atteinte de maladies telle que le phyllox\u00e9ra et par cons\u00e9quent sans traitement chimique.
\nLe domaine cultive \u00e9galement des vignes qui ont la particularit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00eatre les plus hautes du monde (3150 m\/mer) et probablement les plus vielles, puisque les ceps sont plant\u00e9s sur leurs racines d\u2019origine.
\nL\u2019accueil au domaine est tr\u00e8s chaleureux et nous avons droit \u00e0 une visite des installations, une vid\u00e9o relatant l\u2019histoire du domaine et pour le bouquet final, une d\u00e9gustation des vins produits sur le domaine.<\/p>\n

Colom\u00e9<\/i><\/b>, is the first Bodega we visit. A 10km dirt road leads though semi-arid, beautifully coloured rocky land to the Bodega and its vineyards. Colom\u00e9 was created by the Spanish in 1831 with the help of the governor\u2019s daughter that brought the first plants from the area of Bordeaux across the Atlantic. Since in Europe at this time the vines were still grown on their own stems all vineyards here were and still are plated like this. The very dry air and the secluded location explain that typical wine diseases have not reached Colom\u00e9 allowing the traditional process. It most likely also explains why you can find here the worldwide oldest vineyards with vines from the beginning of the Bodega, so more than 180 years old.
\nThe bodega was bought and fully renovated by a Swiss in 2001. Since then the wine is grown organically and positioned (justifiably) as a high quality product. The warm welcome, the pleasant tour, the charm of the site and last but not least the excellent tasting make it a very pleasant afternoon.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

We profit from the beauty of the area and spend the night and half of the next day just off the road on our way back to the main road.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

……..nous reprenons la route en direction de Cafayate<\/b> en poursuivant le long de la ruta 40 \u00e0 travers la \u00ab\u00a0Valle Calchaquies\u00a0\u00bb.
\n<\/b>Cette vall\u00e9e pr\u00e9sente des paysages \u00e0 couper le souffle.
\nLa roche de couleur ocre a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9rod\u00e9e par le temps et les \u00e9l\u00e9ments et \u00e0 chaque virage nous offre une nouvelle sculpture.<\/p>\n

The little charming town of Cafayate<\/b> that lies between several large bodegas, is our next target. On the way there we drive through the beautiful \u00a0<\/b>\u201cValle Calchaquies\u201d\u00a0<\/b>and its spectacular rock formations.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Ce matin, nous partons t\u00f4t afin d\u2019aller randonner le long du Rio Colorado<\/b>, pr\u00e8s de Cafayate<\/b>.
\nA nouveau des paysages magnifiques ou le cactus cand\u00e9labre est roi.
\n
\nThe next day we start early from Cafayate to hike through the gorge of Rio Colorado<\/b>.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

La journ\u00e9e ayant encore de belles heures devant elle, et ayant pris go\u00fbt aux vins de la r\u00e9gion, nous en profitons pour visiter une nouvelle cave (bodega).
\nCette fois, c\u2019est le tour de la bodega Esteco<\/b>.
\nAccueil chaleureux et visite tr\u00e8s instructive, suivie d\u2019une d\u00e9gustation nous donnent un point de vue assez complet de ce domaine viticole appartenant \u00e0 un grand groupe.
\n
\nAfter the hike follows the next bodega visit: Esteco<\/b> (we decided one Bodega a day is enough, although this does not do justice to the many we are potentially interested to visit\u2026). Again excellent wines, beautiful site and we now carry 10 bottles of wine in the camping car (delicately stored between the sleeping bags, our cloths, our books\u2026).<\/span>
\nIn this area the most remarkable white wine comes from the grape Toront\u00e9s. a grape that is exclusively grown in Argentina. A wine we will definitely look out for back in CH.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Un voyageur motocycliste, rencontr\u00e9 r\u00e9cemment, nous dit que la ruta 68, remontant de Cafayate \u00e0 Salta pr\u00e9sente des paysages aussi grandioses que ceux rencontr\u00e9s sur la ruta 40.
\nNous d\u00e9cidons d\u2019en faire l\u2019exp\u00e9rience et ne sommes pas d\u00e9\u00e7us.<\/p>\n

The next day, we continue the visit of the area with more spectacular rocks and panoramas.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Toujours le long de la ruta 40, nous arrivons \u00e0 Amaicha del Valle<\/b>.<\/span>
\nCe village a la particularit\u00e9 d\u2019abriter un magnifique mus\u00e9e consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 la Pachamama<\/b> (la terre nourrici\u00e8re en langage quechua).<\/span>
\nNous n\u2019en voyons malheureusement que l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur, vu que c\u2019est dimanche et jour<\/span>
\nde fermeture. Dommage\u00a0!<\/span>
\n
\nFurther down south in Amaicha del Valle<\/b> we stop to visit a very spectacular museum of Pachamama<\/b>, the goddess of the earth which is a key figure in the Inka religion and still
\ns spiritual world of South America. Unfortunately the museum is closed on Sundays and we can only make a few photos across the fence.<\/i><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\nProchaine \u00e9tape, Vallecito<\/b>.
\nVallecito abrite le sanctuaire de la \u00ab\u00a0Difunta Correa\u00a0\u00bb.<\/b>
\nDeolinda Correa<\/b> \u00e9tait une femme mari\u00e9e dont l\u2019\u00e9poux, Clemente Bustos, fut recrut\u00e9 pendant les guerres civiles qui ont agit\u00e9 l\u2019Argentine au milieu du\u00a0XIXe\u00a0<\/a>si\u00e8cle. Deolinda, soucieuse de la sant\u00e9 de son mari, entreprit de suivre la troupe dans les d\u00e9serts de San Juan avec son nourrisson, quelques vivres et deux gourdes d\u2019eau. Lorsque ses provisions furent \u00e9puis\u00e9es, elle se coucha \u00e0 l\u2019ombre d\u2019un arbre, son fils au sein, et elle mourut de soif, de faim et d\u2019\u00e9puisement.
\nSon corps fut retrouv\u00e9 le lendemain par des muletiers, mais le nourrisson, qui avait continu\u00e9 \u00e0 t\u00e9ter, \u00e9tait bien vivant. Deolinda fut enterr\u00e9e dans les environs, \u00e0 Vallecito, et l\u2019enfant fut emport\u00e9. Selon une version de la l\u00e9gende, il d\u00e9c\u00e9da le lendemain et fut inhum\u00e9 aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de sa m\u00e8re; selon une autre, il fut recueilli et \u00e9lev\u00e9 par une famille.
\nLe culte \u00e0 Deolinda Correa commen\u00e7a peu apr\u00e8s sa mort, lorsque des paysans vinrent se recueillir sur sa tombe. Peu \u00e0 peu, on lui attribua des miracles, dont le premier aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 la survie de son fils.
\nLe sanctuaire de Vallecito, qui comprend aujourd\u2019hui pr\u00e8s de vingt chapelles, est devenu un v\u00e9ritable village o\u00f9 un million de personnes se rendent en moyenne chaque ann\u00e9e. Le culte de Difunta Correa s\u2019est r\u00e9pandu parmi les muletiers, puis parmi les camionneurs. Ceux-ci ont pris l\u2019habitude de dresser de petits sanctuaires tr\u00e8s simples le long des routes de l\u2019Argentine, et d\u2019y laisser des bouteilles d\u2019eau afin, croient-ils d\u2019apaiser la soif de la d\u00e9funte.<\/p>\n

Vallecito<\/i><\/b> has a famous shrine to the Difunta Correa<\/b>, Argentina\u2019s most loved unofficial saint whose infant, according to legend, survived at her breast even after the mothers death from thirst in the desert. The site has close to 20 chapels and everywhere you\u2019ll see heaps of plastic water bottles left as offerings to ask for safe journeys. You can also see hundreds of model size houses and car registration plates to ask for help for a new house or new car\u2026 During Holy Week more than 100\u2019000 pilgrims visit the site.<\/i><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Le lendemain, nous atteignons Mendoza<\/b>.
\nNous y restons deux jours afin de faire un tour de la ville au moyen d\u2019un \u00ab\u00a0Citybus<\/b>\u00a0\u00bb et aussi parcourir le centre \u00e0 pied, autour de la\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0Plaza Independencia<\/b>\u00a0\u00bb et faire une pause-caf\u00e9 chez Havanna<\/b>, la r\u00e9f\u00e9rence pour les \u00ab\u00a0Alfajores<\/b>\u00a0\u00bb, petit g\u00e2teau au \u00ab\u00a0dulce de leche\u00a0\u00bb(confiture de lait), tr\u00e8s consomm\u00e9 en Argentine.<\/p>\n

The next day we get to Medonza<\/b>, the famous centre of Argentinians red wine area (in particular Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon). The modern, dynamic and attractive city was completely destroyed in the 1861 earthquake and was rebuilt with wide avenues and low buildings (as a precaution against earthquakes). Mendoza has many parks and gardens and is thickly panted with trees. Of cause one of our objectives besides visiting the ruins of the old town, see some of the lively town centre and walk in some of the beautiful parks and gardens, is the visit of another Bodega\u2026<\/p>\n

<\/i><\/span>PS: since about 1 week I am trying to migrate my iPhone to the new Nestl\u00e9 set-up for mobile devices. But with the non-existing or very weak wifi connection we found in the country side between Salta and Mendoza this turned out to be rather difficult.
\nWhile testing wifis and waiting for the up-date to happen, we consume uncountable excellent Caffe Cortado\u2019s and delicious Alfajore biscuits and Media Lunas. But unfortunately this only resulted in frustration and weight gain on our side.
\n<\/i><\/span>Finally, in Mendoza, with the super help of Juan, an expert of Vevey and probably the 10th<\/sup> coffee place with thanks god a (relatively) strong wifi. my iPhone and my iPad successfully migrate. <\/i>Uff!!!<\/p>\n

<\/i><\/span>Impossible de quitter Mendoza sans aller y visiter l\u2019une de ses nombreuses bodegas.
\nNous choisissons la bodega \u00ab\u00a0La Rural\u00a0\u00bb<\/b> qui se trouve \u00e0 Maipu<\/b>, au sud de la ville.
\nLa visite s\u2019av\u00e8re des plus int\u00e9ressantes, non seulement par l\u2019excellente prestation de notre charmante guide, suivie d\u2019une d\u00e9gustation mais aussi par la visite de leur mus\u00e9e totalement incroyable.
\nOn peut y voir des outils, des cuves, des chariots datant de la cr\u00e9ation de la bodega par un Italien du Pi\u00e9mont du nom de Rubini <\/b>en 1889.<\/p>\n

For our winery visit\u00a0we have chosen Bodega<\/b> Rural<\/b>, situated in the south of Mendoza with an excellent museum that shows an unbelievable amount of old wine making tools and of cause with an excellent wine tasting\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

C\u2019est maintenant le moment de quitter l\u2019Argentine et de passer les Andes pour aller au Chili.
\nC\u2019est vers Valparaiso<\/b> que nous allons nous diriger.
\nPlut\u00f4t que de prendre la route principale, suite aux conseils d\u2019un couple d\u2019Allemands, nous prenons la piste qui m\u00e8ne \u00e0 Uspallata<\/b> en passant par Villavicencio.
\nTr\u00e8s jolie piste \u00e0 travers les montagnes qui nous fait passer un col \u00e0 3000 m\/mer.<\/p>\n

Avant de franchir celui-ci, nous nous arr\u00eatons au \u00ab\u00a0Puente del Inca<\/b>\u00a0\u00bb afin d\u2019y admirer le pont cr\u00e9\u00e9 au fil du temps par des s\u00e9diments. Ce lieu, dot\u00e9 d\u2019une source thermale et desservi au d\u00e9but du 20\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle par le train a \u00e9t\u00e9 un endroit fort fr\u00e9quent\u00e9.
\nAujourd\u2019hui, les thermes sont ferm\u00e9s, la composition de l\u2019eau ayant un taux de CO2 trop \u00e9lev\u00e9.
\nLa fr\u00e9quentation de l\u2019endroit est cependant toujours \u00e9lev\u00e9e, vu que c\u2019est sur la route qui m\u00eame \u00e0 la fronti\u00e8re Chilienne, distante d\u2019une quinzaine de kilom\u00e8tres et surtout que ce pont naturel, fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 par les \u00e9manations sulfureuses est d\u2019une grande beaut\u00e9.<\/p>\n

From here we will cross over to Chile direction Valparaiso<\/strong> and then to Santiago<\/strong>. Even though it is one of the most used border crossings between Argentina and Chile, the road still climbs above 3000m. On the road we stop to admire the Puente del Inka<\/strong>, which is naturally built from sediments. The site was until recent used as Thermal Baths.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

C\u2019est ensuite dans le \u00ab\u00a0Parque Provencial Aconcagua\u00a0\u00bb<\/b> tout proche que nous faisons un petit tour.
\nCe parc est l\u2019un des points de d\u00e9part pour l\u2019ascension de l\u2019Aconcagua<\/b>, montagne la plus haute du continent sud-am\u00e9ricain qui culmine \u00e0 6960 m\u00e8tres sur son sommet nord.<\/p>\n

The border between both countries sits right in the middle of the Andes and you can see the highest Mountain of South America right from the road. The Aconcagua<\/strong> is 6960m high and you get a better view of it if you take a walk through the National Park that surrounds it.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Nous descendons maintenant \u00e0 Valparaiso<\/b>.
\nCette grande cit\u00e9 de plus de 40 collines pr\u00e9sente une image haute en couleurs.
\nLes maisons des quartiers populaires, construites sur les collines sont toutes de couleurs vives et vari\u00e9es.
\nL\u2019acc\u00e8s \u00e0 ces collines se fait normalement par des ascenseurs construits au d\u00e9but du 20\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle et qui sont toujours en \u00e9tat de fonctionnement.
\nCependant, appartenant \u00e0 des concessions priv\u00e9es, et d\u2019un rapport financier peu int\u00e9ressant, ils sont aujourd\u2019hui malheureusement hors service. La commune de Valparaiso n\u2019ayant pas les moyens de les racheter.<\/p>\n

A ce stade, il devrait y avoir quelques images de Valparaiso mais quelques petits probl\u00e8mes d\u2019appareil font qu\u2019elles ont disparu. Snif\u00a0!!!<\/p>\n

From the mountains we drive right down to the coast and get into Valparaiso by mid November. The charming town is built on over 40 hills and the ocean view is stunning from probably all of them. The main residential areas are colourful and have a bohemian flair. Slums, stunning beaches and pleasant mediterranean climate contribute to the cities special atmosphere. Since early 1900 the main hills can be climbed with beautiful lifts. Unfortunately none of them is working while we are here due to strikes <\/i>L<\/i>.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

We spend 2 very peasant days here and do take a few great pictures, but unfortunately lost all of them \ud83d\ude41
\n<\/i>
\n<\/i><\/span>Nous quittons cette ville apr\u00e8s deux jours et longeons la c\u00f4te vers le sud avant de tourner vers Santiago.
\nEn fin de journ\u00e9e, nous d\u00e9couvrons un endroit des plus isol\u00e9, au sommet d\u2019une falaise dominant l\u2019oc\u00e9an.
\nTrop beau\u00a0! Nous y restons pour y passer la nuit.
\nFrom here we follow the coast line direction south and discover a place where we can spend the night with unlimited view on the ocean:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

C\u2019est maintenant le moment d\u2019aller \u00e0 Santiago de Chile<\/b> et d\u2019y visiter Pierre Graf et Max Poblete,<\/b> un ancien coll\u00e8gue du PTC Orbe.<\/p>\n

Pierre, Vaudois d\u2019origine et In\u00e8s son \u00e9pouse chilienne, habitent une ravissante propri\u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 Lampa, \u00e0 30 km de Santiago.
\nLa douceur du climat et le style de vie leur ont fait quitter la Suisse pour s\u2019\u00e9tablir ici.
\nLeur vie se passe au milieu des vergers et des jardins dont ils vendent le produit \u00e0 des restaurent et des grossistes qui les revendent sur les march\u00e9s de Santiago.
\nIls s\u2019occupent \u00e9galement de la construction de serres \u00e0 Puerto Montt<\/b> en Patagonie, cette r\u00e9gion manquant cruellement de produits frais.
\nNous passons deux soir\u00e9es tr\u00e8s sympathiques en leur compagnie.
\n
\nSantiago<\/strong> is described as follows in our guide: “Santiago is one of the most beautifully set of any South American city, standing in a wide plain with the magnificent chain of the Andes in full view – rain and pollution permitting. Santiago bursts with possibilities with its parks, museums, shops and heck tick nightlife and is also within easy reach of vineyards, beaches and ski resorts”.
\nNo need to add anything from our side other than if we had to chose a city in South America to live in, Santiago would be the one.
\n<\/span><\/i>This is probably also linked to the fact that we are lucky to have friends in the area, Max<\/strong> and Pierre<\/strong>, which helped us to see the very best of the area!<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Max<\/strong> is Chilean and has worked with us in Orbe many years ago and now lives with his family in Santiago. Pierre<\/strong> is a friend from Montagny and now life’s with Ines his Chilean wife in Lampa very close to Santiago.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

With Pierre and Ines we spend two enjoyable evenings in their lovel country house and\u00a0leave with a heap of oranges and lemons freshly harvested from their garden!<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Quand \u00e0 Max et\u00a0 Ximena son \u00e9pouse, ils vivent \u00e0 Santiago dans un immeuble dont leur appartement offre une magnifique vue sur la ville.

Durant les deux jours pass\u00e9s en leur pr\u00e9sence, ils vont nous faire visiter le centre de la r\u00e9gion viticole du Chili qui se trouve \u00e0 Santa Cruz<\/b>, 200 km au sud de Santiago.<\/p>\n

Nous\u00a0commen\u00e7ons par un excellent repas au restaurant de\u00a0la bodega Viu Manent,<\/b>
\nsuivi d\u2019une visite du domaine de la bodega Montes.
\nCette cave pr\u00e9sente un c\u00f4t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressant car toute la construction ainsi que l\u2019\u00e9levage du vin se fait selon l\u2019art mill\u00e9naire chinois du \u00ab\u00a0Feng shui\u00a0\u00bb qui a pour but d\u2019harmoniser l\u2019\u00e9nergie environnementale d\u2019un lieu de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 favoriser la sant\u00e9, le bien-\u00eatre et la prosp\u00e9rit\u00e9 de ses occupants.<\/p>\n

Together with Max<\/strong> and Ximena\u00a0we visit the surrounding vineyards while chatting over old memories when Max and I worked together in the Cereal Department in Orbe. All Bodegas we see are beautiful but\u00a0Viu Manent<\/strong>\u00a0is particular remarkable\u00a0with the entire building\u00a0following Feng Shui (ancient chines art that balances the energy of any given space to ensure health and good fortune for people inhabiting it) and\u00a0high quality wines listening to spiritual music while ripening in French oak barrels.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Nous faisons \u00e9galement un tour de Santiago et de ses environs avec notre guide Max qui nous en montre tous les aspects.
