Un mois d\u00e9j\u00e0<\/strong> de pass\u00e9 depuis notre arriv\u00e9e en Zambie<\/strong>.
Il est donc temps de vous raconter ce que nous avons fait durant cette p\u00e9riode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I<\/span>t is already one month that we are back to Zambia! We are well into camping mode and enjoy the pleasant autumn climate as well as the contact with the gentle people of this country. <\/span>
With the current situation our initial plans to slowly drive home from here have changed. For the next few months we will visit Zambia and Tanzania (maybe a bit of Kenya) and then ship the Azala\u00ef home from the east coast. There is still the idea to also see some of Namibia again (complete opposite direction<\/span><\/em> <\/span>😉). So nothing is written in stone and we will decide as we go along. <\/em>
Anyway. Here is our first report:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dimanche 28 mars.<\/strong>
Jour de notre arriv\u00e9e dans ce pays grand comme deux fois l\u2019Allemagne<\/strong> mais seulement 20% de sa population.
Karien, de Kayube Estate<\/strong> pr\u00e8s de Livingstone, vient nous chercher \u00e0 l\u2019a\u00e9roport.
Une carte SIM \u00e0 1 franc avec 14Gb de donn\u00e9es pour 8CHF, quelques courses, retrait de Kwatchas (monnaies locale) et c\u2019est parti pour Kayube.
Arriv\u00e9s \u00e0 la lodge, nous retrouvons notre Azala\u00ef <\/strong>soigneusement ripolin\u00e9 par Junior<\/strong> apr\u00e8s ces 18 mois pass\u00e9s dans le hangar du lieu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In October 2019 we had had the brilliant idea to leave our car with Karien at Kayube Estate next to Livingstone in the far south of Zambia. Today, march 28, 2021, Karien pics us up at airport, and brings us directly to our Azala\u00ef that is in perfect shape after 18 months of storage in a hangar where \u201cJunior\u201d has well taken care of it together with a mixed group of European off-road vehicles.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous passons la premi\u00e8re semaine sur place \u00e0 nous pr\u00e9parer pour le voyage \u00e0 venir mais aussi \u00e0 nous pr\u00e9lasser au bord de la piscine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We stay a few days at the beautiful estate to acclimatize ourselves and get everything ready for our trip (maintenance, paperwork, food shopping, telephone chip, etc).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mercredi 1er avril.<\/strong>
Aujourd\u2019hui, nous nous rendons \u00e0 Livingstone<\/strong> pour changer la batterie de l\u2019Azala\u00ef qui donne des signes de faiblesse, faire quelques courses et passer \u00e0 la douane afin de finaliser les papiers manquants.
A 16 heures nous nous rendons dans un petit h\u00e9liport<\/strong> en vue d\u2019effectuer un survol de 30 minutes sur le site des Chutes Victoria<\/strong>.
Cadeau de Sylke \u00e0 Michel pour son anniversaire 2019<\/strong>.
Il faut pr\u00e9ciser que lorsque nous \u00e9tions l\u00e0 \u00e0 fin 2019 la s\u00e9cheresse r\u00e9gnait dans toute l\u2019Afrique australe, et le Zamb\u00e8ze<\/strong> \u00e9tant quasi \u00e0 sec, ne pr\u00e9sentait pas un spectacle optimal pour une visite et encore moins pour un survol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once all is ready we visit the Victory falls situated just outside of Livingston. A good timing since it is the end of the rainy season and the water flow is at its max!<\/span>
Michels 2019 birthday present should have been a flight over the Okavango delta. But due to the drought that year we had to cancel it and instead we are doing a helicopter flight today.<\/span><\/em> 😃<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ces chutes figurent parmi les plus spectaculaires du monde. Le Zamb\u00e8ze<\/strong>, large de plus de
2 km<\/strong> \u00e0 cet endroit, s’engouffre bruyamment, d\u2019une hauteur de plus de 100 m\u00e8tres<\/strong> dans une s\u00e9rie de gorges de basalte, provoquant une brume iris\u00e9e visible \u00e0 plus de 20 km de distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After signing a disclaimer (nobody is responsible if anything goes wrong, great introduction!<\/span><\/em> 🤔 ), we get on the tiny helicopter. Michel says a small one is much better than a big one and before I even realized that I maybe could be frightened we take off for the spectacular flight! (It is my very first flight with something that small and agile<\/span><\/em> 🥴). In addition, to balance the weight I am seated in front, where you feel like you are suspended in the air because of the big bubble window in front.
First we do several rounds above the falls and then the pilot dives into the gorge and slaloms through the tight meanders. Very close to the water and very close to the cliffs, I find.<\/span> <\/em>😱 
30min later we are back on the ground. Wow<\/span>! 🤩 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeudi 4 avril<\/strong>
Apr\u00e8s les avoir survol\u00e9es, nous allons aujourd\u2019hui les visiter \u00e0 pied.
V\u00eatus l\u00e9g\u00e8rement, car \u00e7a va mouiller, nous parcourons le sentier parsem\u00e9 de points de vue majestueux, mais tellement pr\u00e8s des chutes que nous nous retournons tremp\u00e9s jusqu\u2019au os par les embruns en moins de temps qu\u2019il ne faut pour le dire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day we the walk along the falls. Fortunately it is hot today. We are soaked to the skin in seconds. The noise and the wall of water is awesome! <\/em><\/span>Up to 108 m deep and 1.7km wide the Vic. falls are double the hight of Niagara and 1.5 times wider.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Samedi 3 avril<\/strong>
Nous sommes maintenant pr\u00eats pour entamer notre p\u00e9riple.
Apr\u00e8s les adieux \u00e0 Karien et \u00e0 Junior <\/strong>qui s\u2019est occup\u00e9 de l\u2019Azala\u00ef durant son long s\u00e9jour ici, nous quittons Kayube Estate<\/strong> et prenons la route en direction de Lusaka<\/strong>, capitale du pays.
Nous nous arr\u00eatons \u00e0 mi-chemin sur le site de Moorings Farm & Campsite<\/strong> en attendant que les f\u00eates de P\u00e2ques soient pass\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easter Saturday, we finally start our tour direction north through the east of Sambia (we toured the west in 2019). Our first objective is the capital Lusaka 470 km further north.
We make a stop overs at Moorings Farm & campsite. A lovely green site with plenty of flowers and birds.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luckily there is good internet connection and I can do a call with my mentee in Nigeria.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lundi 5 avril<\/strong>
Ce matin, nous passons \u00e0 la ferme \u00e0 laquelle appartient le camping afin d\u2019aller visiter le centre artisanal.<\/strong>
Malambo Center<\/strong> \u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 construit en 2002<\/strong> et financ\u00e9 par la Hollande<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To the farm belongs the Malabo Centre<\/strong> where 29 women from the surrounding villages make colorful objects from tissue like shopping bags, wall organizers, bibs, etc. that are sold at the market in Lusaka.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous reprenons la route en fin de matin\u00e9e pour nous rapprocher de Lusaka<\/strong>.
Une dizaine de kilom\u00e8tres avant la ville, nous choisissons de nous arr\u00eater au
\u00ab Village Rest Camp<\/strong> \u00bb
Nous allons rester quelques jours dans le coin car nous envisageons de faire faire un service \u00e0 l\u2019Azala\u00ef, de faire remplir l\u2019une de nos bonbonnes de gaz et si possible de trouver une pi\u00e8ce de rechange pour notre cuisini\u00e8re mobile Coleman.
Nous allons bien-s\u00fbr aussi en profiter pour visiter un peu la ville de Lusaka<\/strong>, tout en restant tr\u00e8s prudent, car il semble que la petite criminalit\u00e9 y soit assez d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mardi 6 avril<\/strong>,
Nous nous rendons en ville  en fin de matin\u00e9e et nous trouvons pris dans un bouchon 3 km avant d\u2019arriver dans le centre commercial choisi pour faire quelques courses.
Le centre ville est compl\u00e8tement satur\u00e9 et il faut s\u2019imposer pour avancer.
Il n\u2019y a pas vraiment de r\u00e8gles de circulation. C\u2019est le plus t\u00e9m\u00e9raire qui fait le mieux son chemin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We arrive in Lusaka<\/strong>. The capital<\/strong> has roughly 2 million inhabitants<\/strong> and just like in all fast growing cities the traffic is a nightmare. Nevertheless we discover that Zambia\u2019s drivers are rather respectful and much more cooperative than Europeans. They let you in but also expect to be let in. This way everybody advances meter by meter…<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avant de rentrer, on passe chez Afrox Gaz<\/strong> pour fair le plein de notre bouteille europ\u00e9enne.
La premi\u00e8re r\u00e9ponse de l\u2019employ\u00e9 en la voyant est de me dire qu\u2019ils n\u2019ont pas ce genre de raccord. J\u2019insiste un peu en disant qu\u2019en Afrique rien n\u2019est impossible et, peut-\u00eatre atteint dans sa fiert\u00e9, il me dit qu\u2019il va tenter le coup.
En faisant le tour des diff\u00e9rents postes de remplissage, il en trouve un qui n\u2019a pas le bon filetage mais avec un peu de bande d\u2019\u00e9tanch\u00e9it\u00e9 et beaucoup d\u2019insistance il arrive \u00e0 le rendre \u00e9tanche.
C\u2019est gagn\u00e9 !!!
Je repars fi\u00e8rement avec une bouteille pleine.
Le retour se fait \u00e0 travers des quartiers color\u00e9s et peupl\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is not much to visit in Lusaka but if you look around you will discover how people live and survive in a very busy city where so many hope to make a better life and every opportunity is taken to earn a penny or two.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vendredi 9 avril<\/strong>
De bon matin, nous allons encore faire une visite aux gros oiseaux avant qu\u2019ils ne prennent leur envol aux premiers thermiques engendr\u00e9s par le soleil r\u00e9chauffant le sol.
De retour \u00e0 l’Azal\u00ef, Sylke<\/strong> se transforme en boulang\u00e8re et produit un magnifique pain<\/strong> dans notre four Omnia.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also use the stop to bake some sourdough bread <\/strong>in our \u201cOmina oven\u201d a genius invention that allows you to bake bread on a gas stove. <\/em>🤩
For this purpose I had carefully packed and imported some of my sourdough. I had placed it asap into the fridge at Kayube Estate and was happy that nothing had spilled out during the flight and the cultures seamed alive.
Unfortunately Michel then decided to reduce the temperature of the fridge which basically froze the whole content of it including my sourdough<\/em> 😢
<\/span>So I had to restart a new sourdough, which I had never done before.<\/span><\/em>
Finally an interesting exercise and it worked!\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il est pass\u00e9 midi quand nous nous mettons en route pour l\u2019\u00e9tape suivante.
En cours de route, un joli caf\u00e9 du nom de Fig Tree Caf\u00e9<\/strong> nous tend les bras et nous nous laissons facilement tenter par son jardin et ses tables ombrag\u00e9es.
Arriv\u00e9s dans l\u2019agglom\u00e9ration de Kabwe<\/strong> vers les 15h30, nous prenons la d\u00e9cision d\u2019en rester l\u00e0 pour aujourd\u2019hui.
En consultant le guide Hupe<\/strong>, nous sommes attir\u00e9s par la Luangwa Safari Lodge<\/strong>.
Cr\u00e9\u00e9 il y a une vingtaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es par Burkard Will<\/strong>, allemand d\u2019origine, l\u2019endroit est magnifique.
Il n\u2019officie normalement pas comme camping mais il accepte volontiers de nous ins\u00e9rer dans une petite place devant son bungalow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next stop-over in the backroads of a lively little town called Kabwe<\/strong>.
Burkard<\/strong> the german owner has come to Sambia many years ago for motor biking and adventure. By now he has built a lovely lodge and organizes professional motorbike safaris<\/strong>. He is super passionate about Sambia and very quickly makes us change our plans for our route up north. We spend a lovely evening together over South African wine and wood fire pizza professionally baked by Burkard!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

En sirotant une bi\u00e8re au bar, nous avons la bonne surprise de voir arriver
Miss Zambie 2020<\/strong>, accompagn\u00e9e de 5 jolies filles, toutes candidates au prochain concours.
Durant deux heures, elles vont s\u2019entrainer \u00e0 d\u00e9filer devant le bar, sous la houlette de la Miss actuelle qui leur dispense moult conseils avis\u00e9s.
Joli spectacle !
Comme tous les vendredis soirs, c\u2019est soir\u00e9e Pizza<\/strong>, avec Burkard <\/strong>qui officie \u00e0 la cuisson dans son four \u00e0 bois.
C\u2019est l\u2019occasion de nous enrichir de pr\u00e9cieuses informations sur le pays et des endroits \u00e0 visiter.

Samedi 10 avril<\/strong>
Encore un petit tour de cette jolie lodge……<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…….et encore un moment avec Burkard <\/strong>autour d’un caf\u00e9 sur la terrasse de son bungalow, et nous voil\u00e0 repartis en modifiant un peu notre itin\u00e9raire initial, suite \u00e0 ses suggestions.
Au lieu de continuer notre progression vers le nord en suivant la route principale, nous prenons la piste D421<\/strong> qui va nous amener d\u2019abord au bord du lac de barrage Mulungushi.<\/strong>
C\u2019est le Mulungushi Boat Club<\/strong> qui nous permet de nous installer sur son terrain, directement au bord du lac.
Encore un magnifique endroit qui nous fait rapidement prendre la d\u00e9cision d\u2019y rester un jour de plus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dimanche 11 avril<\/strong>
Nous nous pr\u00e9lassons gentiment au bord du lac lorsqu\u2019une famille indienne, n\u00e9e en Zambie vient mettre leur bateau \u00e0 l\u2019eau pour une sortie p\u00eache \u00e0 la ligne.
Nous faisons connaissance avant qu\u2019ils partent au large et lorsqu\u2019ils reviennent (bredouille), Ketten<\/strong> nous propose de monter sur son bateau pour qu\u2019il puisse nous montrer les endroits \u00e0 ne pas manquer de voir avant que l\u2019on reparte.
Sympa !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next morning we redirect our road eastwards into the backcountry<\/strong>. On a surprisingly good gravel road we pass numerous tiny typical Sambian villages where the people live from corn, sweet potatoes and veggies they grow around their straw and mud huts<\/strong>. <\/em>🛖 sometimes there is a well and a pump, sometimes there is a river where they get their water. People are poor but the are not miserable. The always smile and wave at us shyly.<\/em><\/span>

After a while we get to the Mulingushi dam<\/strong> that belongs to a 100 year old still functioning power station. There is a boat club <\/strong>and a camping right at the water. The club dates back to the English occupation and was apparently very active then with many sailboats and regular regattas (the British left Sambia in 1961). The old clubhouse still has the feel of stylish tee parties and cocktail evenings.
The ambience is very pleasant here and the few club members we meet are super friendly. An Indian-Sambian family even invites us for a boat ride. <\/em>😀
We stay two days and explore the dam and a waterfall. No swimming though. There is bilharzia (a worm parasite) and probably crocodiles in the lake<\/em> 🥴\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lundi 12 avril<\/strong>
D\u00e8s huit heures ce matin, suivant les informations de Ketten<\/strong>, nous chaussons nos baskets et partons \u00e0 la recherche d\u2019une cascade et de la sortie d\u2019eau du barrage.
Nous d\u00e9couvrons les deux endroits assez facilement et sommes enchant\u00e9s d\u2019avoir rencontr\u00e9 Ketten et sa famille au vu du spectacle offert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous contournons les barri\u00e8res de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et nous approchons du puissant jet d’eau produit \u00e0 la sotie de la vanne de vidange du barrage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The overflow valve<\/strong> is impressive now that we are at the end of the rainy season.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il est midi lorsque nous quittons les bords du lac Mulungushi <\/strong>et nous dirigeons vers un autre lac de barrage, 80 kilom\u00e8tres plus au nord, le Mita Hills Dam<\/strong>.
Suivant les informations donn\u00e9es par Burkard Will<\/strong> de Luangwa Safari Lodge<\/strong>, nous trouvons l\u2019endroit qu\u2019il nous a mentionn\u00e9, et nous installons pour la fin de la journ\u00e9e sur un promontoire rocheux dominant le lac.
Magnifique !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Burkards second recommendation we follow 80km of dirt road to the Mita Hills Damm <\/strong>and easily find his spot for wild camping with a great view over the lake.<\/span><\/em>
The ideal place for a sundowner!\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quelques p\u00eacheurs locaux pr\u00e9parant leurs filets attirent notre attention et nous allons leur rendre une petite visite de courtoisie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We meet four fisherman<\/strong> and exchange a few words in basic English.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comme on avait amen\u00e9 quelques T-Shirts et en voyant l’\u00e9tat des leurs, nous d\u00e9cidons de leur en offrir chacun un.
Ils en ont les yeux qui brillent de reconnaissance et ils nous disent merci \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re zambienne, en applaudissant.
Bien-s\u00fbr, il fallait s\u2019y attendre, quelques instants plus tard, 3 autres p\u00eacheurs nous rejoignent vers l\u2019Azala\u00ef et apr\u00e8s quelques phrases usuelles nous demandent si eux aussi pourraient avoir un T-Shirt.
N\u2019en n\u2019ayant plus \u00e0 offrir, nous leur proposons une pomme afin qu\u2019ils ne partent pas les mains vides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The clothes they wear are rather worn. By now we know that it is important for the people here to be well dressed and it is often impressive how clean an nice their clothes are even if they are poor. So it seems the right moment to give away the four T-shirts Michel has taken for this purpose.\u00a0
A little shy but visibly happy they take them.
A little later, back at the Azala\u00ef 3 other fisherman come to see us and after a little chat they hint that that also would like a T-shirt. Hmm, all we have left are women clothes. So we decide for apples, which they also happily accept <\/span><\/em>😀.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mardi 13 avril<\/strong>
Christofer<\/strong>, le seul des p\u00eacheurs qui parle l\u2019anglais vient chercher Michel<\/strong> au petit matin afin de lui monter la p\u00eache de la nuit.
A voir le bidon de petits poissons, des Carpenters<\/strong>, qu\u2019il qu\u2019il me montre avec fiert\u00e9, accompagn\u00e9 de son \u00e9pouse, nous avons l\u2019impression qu\u2019ils ne sont pas adeptes de la p\u00eache durable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early next morning Christopher<\/strong> the one that speaks a bit more English comes to get Michel to shows him the catch of the night<\/strong>. Mainly very small fishes <\/strong>that we have already seen dried in big quantities one the markets. Apparently the lakes in Sambia are heavily overfished and bigger fish are rarely found.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019objectif est de rejoindre une ferme du nom de Shigun<\/strong>, \u00e0 une centaine de kilom\u00e8tres plus au nord.
Il va nous falloir 4 heures<\/strong> pour y arriver, la piste, pourtant une d\u00e9partementale<\/strong>, \u00e9tant dans un \u00e9tat d\u00e9plorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We continue our road around lunchtime. 4 hours and 100 km very bad dirt road that takes us to Shigun Farm<\/strong>. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arriv\u00e9s \u00e0 Shigun Farm<\/strong>, nous sommes accueillis comme les meilleurs des amis par Hugo et Linde<\/strong> qui nous invitent chez eux pour un caf\u00e9.
Ils nous accompagnent ensuite au bord d\u2019un petit lac (qui sert de r\u00e9serve d\u2019eau pour l\u2019irrigation des champs) au bord duquel nous  nous installons.
L\u2019endroit est juste magnifique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hugo and Linde the owners<\/strong> are passionate campers and have built a camp site at their Dam. Over a welcome coffee they tell us that they came from South Africa 20 years ago and how they have built the whole farm from scratch<\/strong>, at that time quite far away from civilization. For us Europeans this is difficult to imagine and it sounds like pure adventure (and a lot of work). The result is definitely impressive: a stunning farmhouse, a big and busy farm and a large dam for all year water supply!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hugo et Linde<\/strong> originaires d\u2019Afrique du Sud ont construit cette ferme il y a 20 ans et produisent uniquement des semences de ma\u00efs et de soja.
En p\u00e9riode de r\u00e9colte, elle emploie170 personnes<\/strong> qui cueillent les \u00e9pis \u00e0 la main, avant de les s\u00e9cher puis de les \u00e9grener aussi manuellement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It <\/span><\/em>is with regret that we leave Linde and Hugo and this beautiful place. But there is still so much to see in Zambia! In Masansa<\/strong>, the first village we drive through we stop to buy 1 ltr of fuel <\/strong>for our camping stove. All you have to do is ask someone. This person than calls someone, who calls someone… and 5min later you have the right guy that will sell you some fuel<\/em>. <\/span>😁<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La personne en appelle une autre qui en appelle une autre et soudain quelqu’un apparait \u00e0 la porti\u00e8re en se proposant de s’occuper de \u00e7a.

De fait, c\u2019est un march\u00e9 parall\u00e8le int\u00e9ressant.
Les chauffeurs de camion<\/strong> transportant l\u2019essence s\u2019arr\u00eatent dans les villages et en soutirent un peu pour la vendre au march\u00e9 noir.
Ceci permet ensuite aux locaux (et \u00e0 nous) de l\u2019acheter en tr\u00e8s petite quantit\u00e9, ce qui ne serait pas possible dans une station service.
Sylke en profite pour aborder une porteuse de bananes pour en acqu\u00e9rir 6 au prix de 3 Kwatchas ( 15 centimes ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un peu plus de 200km \u00e0 parcourir aujourd\u2019hui pour atteindre les Kundalilla Falls<\/strong>.
Comme les trois quarts sont sur route goudronn\u00e9e, avec quand m\u00eame quelques passages de slalom pour \u00e9viter des trous de taille respectable, nous parcourons la distance en \u00e0 peine plus de 3 heures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides the Victoria falls, Zambias north-east <\/strong>is known for its numerous waterfalls <\/strong>(what a contrast to the dry countries further south).
Kundalila falls<\/strong> is one of them.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

En bordure de la grande cassure de s\u00e9paration des plaques africaine et eurasienne, cette r\u00e9gion est parsem\u00e9e de monticules de 200 \u00e0 300 m\u00e8tres de hauteur permettant une vue panoramique tr\u00e8s \u00e9tendue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mutinondo<\/strong> is a private conservation area <\/strong>of 10\u2019000 ha. There is a beautiful very natural camp from where you can do hikes<\/strong> to curiously rounded hills that look like big lava bubbles and also to lovely waterfall with pools that invite for a swim. All together a unique and peaceful place!<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pas d’eau courante ici, mais la rivi\u00e8re nous offre son eau cristaline que Michel lui subtilise astucieusement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we fill up or tanks with the cristal clear river water<\/strong> that everybody drinks here, and off we go<\/span><\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apr\u00e8s 24km de piste, nous rejoignons la route principale goudronn\u00e9e.
Il faut par cons\u00e9quent, comme \u00e0 chaque fois, adapter la pression des pneus.
On s\u2019arr\u00eate juste avant la route pour l\u2019occasion, dans un endroit qui ne semble pas trop habit\u00e9.
Il ne faut cependant pas plus de 3 minutes pour que l\u2019on soit entour\u00e9s d\u2019une myriade d\u2019enfants curieux de voir ce qu\u2019il se passait l\u00e0.
Michel profite d\u2019avoir le compresseur en action pour organiser une distribution de ballons de baudruche \u00e0 la grande joie de la petite troupe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today there are quite some kilometers of tar road on the program so we have to increase the tire pressure<\/strong>. We do this next to a village and in less than 2 minutes half of the village has come to say hello and see why we have stopped.
The kids are hoping for sweets<\/strong>, but instead Michel inflates a balloon for each of them which creates a lot of excitement!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous avions pr\u00e9vu de monter dans les mar\u00e9cages de Bangweulu<\/strong> pour aller admirer l\u2019oiseau vedette de l\u2019endroit , le Bec-en-Sabot<\/strong>.
Malheureusement, apr\u00e8s nous \u00eatre renseign\u00e9s sur l\u2019accessibilit\u00e9 du lieu, il s\u2019av\u00e8re que nous sommes trop t\u00f4t dans la saison cat tout est encore inond\u00e9.
Nous adaptons par cons\u00e9quent nos plans et nous rendons directement \u00e0 Samfya<\/strong> sur la rive sud du lac Bangweulu<\/strong>.
Cet axe Nord-Sud passait originellement par le Congo pour \u00e9viter les 130km de mar\u00e9cages qu\u2019il aurait fallu traverser.
La Zambie<\/strong> \u00e0 fait un appel d\u2019offre international pour demander quel pays serait d\u2019accord de s\u2019occuper de la construction d\u2019une voie enti\u00e8rement sur son territoire et le seul qui a relev\u00e9 le d\u00e9fi s\u2019av\u00e8re \u00eatre la Chine<\/strong>.
Dr\u00f4le d\u2019impression de rouler sur ce ruban de bitume au milieu de ce gigantesque mar\u00e9cage, grand comme la Suisse, aux milles \u00eelots garnis de leurs palmiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On our route to the north we had planned to visit the Bangweule wetlands <\/strong>where we were hoping to see the rare Shoebill<\/strong> (a big bird with a bill in form of a shoe, I am sure you guessed). Unfortunately we are too early and after the last heavy rainy season the area is still under wate<\/strong>r. <\/em><\/span>😢
So we only drive through the wetlands via a <\/i>solid, elevated tar road <\/strong>financed by? Yes! <\/i>China<\/strong>!<\/i><\/span> The road is well constructed, includes a 3 km long bridge and is accessible all year round. A real benefit for the people that live in the north-east. Before, the direct access from the capital Lusaka was via a transit road through the Kongo, or you had to detour the 15\u2019000 km2 of wetlands via the east.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the north-east of the wetlands lays the Bangweule lake<\/strong>. Only 5 – 7m deep it grows to 15\u2019000 km2 during the rainy season (a third of the size of Switzerland!). The whole area lives from the fish<\/strong> from this lake and dried fish is sold everywhere along the road, only we are not brave enough to try. <\/em>🥴
Instead we buy tomato\u2019s and lemons. By the way, the below is not a “tomato market”. This is A market. But somehow besides few lemons, sweet potatoes, onions and the rare cucumber everybody sells tomatoes.<\/strong> Luckily they taste great, we love them and we wash them with soap before we eat them raw. <\/em><\/span>😋<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We spend a night in Samfia<\/strong> a lively little town at the lake<\/strong>. There is no official camping so we park in the garden of a simple guesthouse literally 2m away from the lake.

Aujourd\u2019hui nous avons au programme d\u2019aller \u00e0 Mansa<\/strong> afin de faire prolonger notre visa qui \u00e9choit le 27.
Arriv\u00e9s l\u00e0, nous nous rendons \u00e0 l\u2019immigration et lorsque nous entrons dans le bureau ad\u00e9quat, deux personnes occupent celui-ci.
L\u2019une d\u2019elle, masqu\u00e9e jusqu\u2019au yeux, le cou ceint d\u2019une \u00e9charpe de couleur claire et v\u00eatu d\u2019une \u00e9paisse veste marron, est litt\u00e9ralement vautr\u00e9e sur sa chaise avec l\u2019air \u00e9vident de ne pas vouloir \u00eatre d\u00e9rang\u00e9e dans l\u2019importante occupation qui est de consulter son t\u00e9l\u00e9phone.
Lorsque nous posons la question de savoir \u00e0 qui des deux s\u2019adresser, il l\u00e8ve nonchalamment la main pour nous montrer que nous devons nous adresser \u00e0 l\u2019autre.
Celui-ci n\u2019a pas l\u2019air d\u2019\u00eatre tr\u00e8s content non plus qu\u2019on le d\u00e9range, mais comme il n\u2019y a pas de troisi\u00e8me personne dans la pi\u00e8ce, il n\u2019a pas d\u2019autre choix que de s\u2019occuper de nous.
Durant les 15 minutes que nous passons dans ce bureau, la premi\u00e8re personne n\u2019a pas boug\u00e9 une oreille et est rest\u00e9e vautr\u00e9e \u00e0 consulter son portable sans honte ni vergogne.
Nous esp\u00e9rons que ce n\u2019est pas l\u00e0 l\u2019image du fonctionnaire zambien standard !?
Notre visa renouvel\u00e9 pour un mois, nous faisons encore le plein de diesel, quelques courses au Shoprite du coin et repartons pour nous replonger dans la nature tranquille et verdoyante des Mumbuluma Falls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before we start a loop through the remote north of the country to see several waterfalls we need to get our visas extended<\/strong>. Mansa<\/strong> is the biggest town in the area and also has an immigration office<\/strong>.
We find the office in the fairly big building only due someone that spontaneously offer his help. No signs at the entrance and no sign in front of the numerous doors inside.
The visa extension surprisingly only takes 10 min<\/strong> and is for free! So thank you Zambia for this! However the atmosphere and the body language of the two men in the office clearly demonstrates irritation and unwillingness to do something for us<\/strong>. There is a television running. The older has his face almost completely covered with a mask and a scarf and when we ask who of the two can help us he negligible wafers his hand to the younger one and then continues to reads something on his iPhone during the full 10 minutes. Luckily the other one turns out to be efficient but only talks the bare minimum with us still signaling that he really should not do this basic work for us.
We leave with our new visas utterly horrified <\/strong>and hope that this wasn\u2019t a representative demonstration of Zambian public services.<\/span><\/em> 😱<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before we leave the town we stock up on food and fuel and take off to our waterfall tour<\/strong><\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeudi 22 avril<\/strong>
Cette province nord de la Zambie se caract\u00e9rise par ses nombreuses cascades
Le gouvernement en tire profit en imposant une taxe d\u2019entr\u00e9e facteur 10 pour les \u00e9trangers (1,5 CHF contre 15 CHF par personne et par jour).
Cette taxe ne profite bien-s\u00fbr pas \u00e0 l\u2019entretien du site et de ses infrastructures, mais bien au bien-\u00eatre des dirigeants du pays et \u00e0 l\u2019alimentation d\u2019une corruption bien implant\u00e9e.
Les gardiens des sites cependant, qui certainement tr\u00e8s mal pay\u00e9s, font un effort de bonne volont\u00e9 impressionnant pour maintenir malgr\u00e9 toute leur v\u00e9tust\u00e9 les installations dans un \u00e9tat de propret\u00e9 irr\u00e9prochable
La cascade de Mumguluma <\/strong>n\u2019\u00e9tant pas tr\u00e8s grande, permet de profiter du bassin cr\u00e9\u00e9 en son aval pour nager un peu dans une eau \u00e9tonnamment temp\u00e9r\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the water falls <\/strong>we will visit are National Monuments<\/strong>, the entrance costs 15$ per person per night which includes camping on a very basic camp ground. Facilities are often badly run down and it is obvious that non of the collected entrance fee is reinvested. Corruption is big in Zambia. The money always goes somewhere, but rarely comes back to the people.
The sites usually have a guard that is super friendly and helpful and is certainly very badly paid. But they are happy to have a job and to earn a little something.<\/span><\/em>

The Mumbulume Falls are ideal for swimming<\/strong>! There are deep pools and the water is pleasantly warm.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On en profite aussi pour prendre une douche, celles-ci \u00e9tant inexistantes sur le camping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of the camp sites in this area has a shower. But who needs a shower if there is a water fall?<\/strong> <\/i><\/span>
Apparently crocodiles don\u2019t like waterfalls and the bilharzia parasites only exists in stagnant water. <\/i><\/span>😅<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encore une cascade au programme du jour.
Cette fois-ci, c\u2019est les Ntumbachushi Falls <\/strong>que nous atteignons apr\u00e8s 190 kilom\u00e8tres de route et de piste.
L\u2019endroit est tr\u00e8s particulier car la seule vraie place qui offre une possibilit\u00e9 de parquer notre Azala\u00ef pour la nuit se situe tout \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la cascade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next day, next water fall. It takes us 190 long km of tar road with plenty of potholes and a bit of dirt road.
The camping is right in front of the Ntumbachushi Falls<\/strong> (right behind the trees), which is fantastic, but also incredibly noisy.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em>🙃<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce matin, James<\/strong>, le gardien du site, nous explique que si nous montons par un petit sentier pour quelques minutes, nous atteignons le haut des chutes et que l\u00e0, la rivi\u00e8re ayant form\u00e9 des cavit\u00e9s dans lesquelles la baignade s\u2019av\u00e8re encore plus g\u00e9niale.
Pas d\u2019h\u00e9sitation ! On s\u2019\u00e9quipe et on y va.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This feels like a tropical paradise<\/strong> and a water fun park<\/strong> at the same time. We are on our own, in the middle of lush vegetation. The water is crystal clear and probably around 25C. There is a current to swim agains (not the strong one in the middle of the river though) and little waterfalls offer a back massage and whirlpool bubble zones. <\/span><\/em>😍<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bon, on en a encore pas fini avec les chutes.
Cet apr\u00e8s-midi, nous nous rendons aux Lumangwe Falls<\/strong>, que nous atteignons apr\u00e8s trois heures de piste, n\u00e9cessitant \u00e0 3 reprises d\u2019engager tous les atouts de l\u2019Azala\u00ef<\/strong>, vitesses rampantes comprises, pour passer l\u2019obstacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have to work hard to get to the 5th water falls.<\/strong> 3 hours of partly rough dirt road. We are early in the season and some areas are still very muddy and rivers are high<\/strong>.
Luckily the worst bits are covered with sticks and branches. So with 4×4 and gear reduction we pass. <\/span><\/em>😅<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ces chutes portent aussi le nom de \u00ab\u00a0Petites Victoria Falls <\/strong>\u00ab, nom bien m\u00e9rit\u00e9 au vu du spectacles qu\u2019elles offrent \u00e0 nos yeux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Little Victoria falls<\/strong>, as the locals call the Lumangwe Falls<\/strong>, merits well its nick name. For us the difference to the Big Vics. is that we have them all for us (not a big surprise with the road conditions), that we camp only a few meters away from the rim (<\/em>😱), and that we can literally walk on the edge up to the tree you see on the second picture. Spectacular!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Petite parenth\u00e8se en chemin, lorsque nous longeons la seule plantation de th\u00e9 du pays, les jeunes arbustes ne sont pas ce qui attire le regard en premier, mais bien ces \u00e9normes termiti\u00e8res<\/strong> en forme de chapeaux de Strumpfs<\/strong> qui occupent toute cette zone.
Nos taupes ont encore du boulot avant de pouvoir rivaliser !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On our way to the last falls (yes there is one more) we pass the only tee plantation<\/strong> in Zambia. It is not so much tee shrubs that attract us but the huge termite mounds<\/strong>!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dimanche 25 avril<\/strong>
Nous allons aujourd\u2019hui rallier le site des Chishimba Falls.<\/strong>
Pour cela, il nous faut parcourir 200km dont la moiti\u00e9 sur une piste comme nous n\u2019en avons encore pas v\u00e9cu jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce jour.
La D19<\/strong> est dans un \u00e9tat \u00e9pouvantable et on a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 loin de rester plant\u00e9s.
Heureusement, les autochtones ont la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019esprit d’\u00e9taler quelques morceaux de bois dans les tous les plus profonds, ce qui nous \u00e9vite de nous enfoncer jusqu\u2019aux essieux.
En vitesse lente, blocage diff\u00e9rentiel activ\u00e9, \u00e7a passe p\u00e9niblement, mais \u00e7a passe.
OUF !!! Sauv\u00e9s pour cette fois !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the 100km difficult dirt road<\/strong> from here to the Chishimba falls we are practicing how to drive in mud. Even where the road is dry it is so washed out that in places it is almost impassable. I don\u2019t think we have seen anything worse than this before. I realize quickly realize that mud is not really my cup of tee and I leave the hardest parts to Michel. <\/span><\/em>😇
Also here the locals have filled the biggest mud holes with brunches but this is hardly enough and we really only just make it<\/strong>.\u00a0We later meet a couple that got stuck here a day before us. It took them hours to get out with the help of a whole village and all of them up to their knees in mud. <\/span><\/em>😱 oh my god!!!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il y aura plusieurs passages d\u00e9licats sur ce tron\u00e7on de 100km que nous serons tr\u00e8s heureux de terminer sans avoir eu besoin de sortir du v\u00e9hicule.
Les Zambiens ont l’habitude de vivre par familles, r\u00e9parties sur tout le territoire dans de petits groupements de huttes comme celles-ci.
Il est extr\u00eamement difficile de s’arr\u00eater en bord de piste sans \u00eatre imm\u00e9diatement envahi par une horde d’enfants qu\u00e9mandant money…money ou sweety…sweety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All along the road there are little villages <\/strong>like this one. We have taken the picture without people since the don\u2019t really like it. But normally there is a big bunch of children and a few adults around (women have 6 children in average and the average age for Zambia is 17!).\u00a0
So each time we have to drive slowly a crowd of children comes (or runs) asking for money…money or sweeties… sweeties… White skin color is rare here and is undeniable associated with money…<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arriv\u00e9s \u00e0 Mporokoso<\/strong>, la route redevient goudronn\u00e9e et tr\u00e8s vite nous nous rendons compte que cela convient aussi aux locaux qui organisent leur march\u00e9 du dimanche directement sur la route principale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Mporokoso<\/strong> the road is tarred again. But there is so little traffic that the Sunday fare<\/strong> is simply held on the county road <\/span><\/em>😀<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lundi 26 avril<\/strong>
On a l\u2019impression, apr\u00e8s avoir vu tant de belles cascades, que l\u2019on va gentiment s\u2019en lasser.
En fait, elles sont tellement diff\u00e9rentes les unes des autres qu\u2019\u00e0 chaque fois nous sommes \u00e9merveill\u00e9s par ces ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes de la nature.
De plus, ces sites n\u2019ayant \u00e0 offrir qu\u2019une simple toilette comme \u00e9quipement pour le campeur, nous sommes tout contents de pouvoir profiter de cette eau vive pour nous baigner.
Chishimba Falls<\/strong> ne fait pas exception et on peut m\u00eame s\u2019approcher \u00e0 quelques centim\u00e8tres de la chute.
On est d\u2019abord accueillis par un joli papillon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another 100 km, now much faster, and we arrive at our 6th water fall<\/strong>.\u00a0Ok let\u2019s have a look but by now we think it is getting a little repetitive.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

…..puis le haut de celle-ci, qui apr\u00e8s la baignade, offre une belle terrasse avec vue pour se laisser s\u00e9cher au soleil.

27 avril<\/strong>
Apr\u00e8s toutes ces cascades, une petite pause s\u2019impose.
Nous trouvons un endroit qui nous parait id\u00e9al quelques 200km plus au nord et qui porte le joli nom de \u00ab\u00a0Flower & Fern Cottage<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb.
Jackie et Kevin<\/strong>, tous deux blancs originaires du Zimbabwe<\/strong> sont venus s\u2019\u00e9tablir ici lorsque le gouvernement Zimbabw\u00e9en \u00e0 commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 chasser les fermiers blancs du territoire il y a une vingtaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es.
L\u2019accueil est fort sympathique et nous disposons d\u2019un joli coin de terrain avec tout le confort n\u00e9cessaire \u00e0 un s\u00e9jour agr\u00e9able.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After one month in Zambia<\/strong> it is now time for a little break also to up-date our blog.<\/strong> With the Flower & Fern Cottage<\/strong> we have found the ideal location for this. The Farm belongs to Jackie and Kevin who came from Zimbabwe 20 years ago. The warm welcome and the spaceous, pleasant campground is all we need for the moment. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

28 avril<\/strong>
Nous d\u00e9cidons finalement de rester ici pour 3 jours et allons profiter de ce temps, entre autres,\u00a0 pour terminer cet article et le poster.
\u00c7a fait maintenant pile-poil un mois<\/strong> que nous sommes en route dans ce pays que nous avons beaucoup appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 par la gentillesse de ses habitants et aussi par le souci qu\u2019ils ont de maintenir leur pays tr\u00e8s propre.
Nous n\u2019avons pas vu de d\u00e9chets trainant dans tous les coins, comme cela peut \u00eatre le cas dans certains pays.
On va rester encore quelques jours en Zambie<\/strong> avant de passer la fronti\u00e8re pour entamer la visite de la Tanzanie<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are close to the northern border and ready to change to Tanzania. Finally we have spent more time in Zambia than we initially thought, mainly because Malawi’s borders are still closed. We have appreciated this extra time here that has allowed us to explore the wetter climate zones of this country and to continue to get to know its gentle people. It is a beautiful and save country that we can only recommend to everybody.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
