Mauvaise synchronisation aujourd\u2019hui, puisque au lieu de dormir au chaud \u00e0 2500 m\u00e8tres, la nuit nous surprend presque au sommet d\u2019un col \u00e0 3900 m\u00e8tres.<br \/>\nLa vue y est magnifique. Il y fait juste un peu frais avec un z\u00e9ro degr\u00e9 au petit matin.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i>To get from Cusco to the <strong>Cordillera Blanca<\/strong> <b>(<\/b>950km north east), rather than take the quicker route along the pacific, we decide to drive through the Andes. We know it will be longer, since the conditions of the roads are not good (almost all dirt road) and vey winding with passes of over 4000m and valleys at around 2000m. But it will allow us to discover the beauty of the region as well as the Andean population and several cities that played an important role in Peru\u2019s history.<br \/>\nJust for comparison, the \u201cRoute des Grandes Alpes\u201d from Lake Geneva to Marseille right through the Alps is around 650km long, the road is fully paves and the highest point is just above 3000m if I remember rightly\u2026<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><i><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">July\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">9 (day 96 of our travel) we take off direction north-east from Cusco to <b>Abancay<\/b> and start climbing up and down across\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">the mountains. La route s\u2019est maintenant transform\u00e9e en piste et surtout en une zone de travaux de plus de 200km. Nous d\u00e9couvrons qu\u2019il est seulement possible de passer entre midi et 13h30. Il est 09h30 lorsque nous arrivons sur la premi\u00e8re barri\u00e8re.<br \/>\nIl ne nous reste plus qu\u2019\u00e0 nous installer confortablement dans l\u2019Azala\u00ef en attendant de pouvoir continuer la route.<br \/>\nL\u2019apr\u00e8s-midi, nous continuons les montagnes russes avec des cols \u00e0 plus de 4000 m\u00e8tres et \u00e0 nouveau, nous sommes \u00e0 3800 m\u00e8tres lorsque vient le moment de s\u2019arr\u00eater.<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The next morning we start early to make headway, but are soon stopped by an important road construction of 200km length that allows traffic only to pass between 12:00 and 13:30. It is 9:30 in the morning\u2026<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Fortunately we are well equipped, pull out our books and install ourselves comfortably for the next hours. We continue our road in the afternoon and again are at a pass of 3800m just before nightfall\u2026<\/span> <\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>La plaine au d\u00e9but de la mont\u00e9e d&#8217;un col. On se dit qu\u2019il n\u2019y pas de probl\u00e8me pour y arriver de jour. Eh bien, c\u2019est sans compter les nombreuses \u00ab\u00a0Gibas\u00a0\u00bb (bosses) ralentisseurs de trafic qui pars\u00e8ment la route et devant lesquelles nous devons quasi nous arr\u00eater \u00e0 chaque fois.<br \/>\nUne autre surprise nous attend \u00e0 10km du but encore sous la forme d\u2019un chantier qui bloque une fois de plus la route. Apr\u00e8s une heure d\u2019attente, nous pouvons finalement\u00a0passer.<br \/>\nLa nuit est tomb\u00e9e\u00a0!<br \/>\nNous finissons le parcours et entrons enfin dans <b>Ayacucho.<\/b><br \/>\nLa circulation y est d\u00e9j\u00e0 difficile de jour mais de nuit, il faut \u00eatre courageux et tr\u00e8s vigilant.<br \/>\nPour finir cette journ\u00e9e en beaut\u00e9, les coordonn\u00e9es que nous avons pour un hostal avec parking qui accepte les camping-cars ne correspondent \u00e0 rien.<br \/>\nNous finissons par nous rabattre sur le guide Footprint et choisissons de passer la nuit \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00f4tel avec l\u2019Azala\u00ef devant notre porte.<br \/>\nIl nous aura fallu 3 jours pour parcourir 550km.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i>The next day, same scenario, this time we are stopped by a road construction at 10:00 in the morning. We continue a good bit during lunch break opening of the blockage, but are not able to make it through the whole length of the constriction. So we try to make it to <b>Ayacucho<\/b>, our next destination, via an alternative road (more a path than a road, average speed &lt; 15km\/h, but beautiful with great views!). We get back to the main road at 4:00 pm and the remaining 30km should be easily done in 1hr and we will get into town with daylight. Not quite\u2026\u00a0 with a new road construction and a very bumpy detour we get into town around 19:00 (we are close to the equator and night fall is around 18:00). Driving in a busy town in Peru is an experience and at night even more so (not sure if any rules apply here at all\u2026) and we finally find a hotel with an appropriate parking for the Azalai at 20:00. We are exhausted and finish the day appropriately with an excellent Pisco Sour!<br \/>\nSo far it took us 3 full days to progress 550km\u2026 but hey, this is Latin America. On y roule \u00e0 25km\/h de moyenne.<br \/>\n30km plus tard, \u00e0 notre grande satisfaction, c\u2019est une magnifique mais tr\u00e8s \u00e9troite route goudronn\u00e9e qui serpente tout au long du <b>Rio Mantaro<\/b> qui nous permet d\u2019avancer correctement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Route principale Ayacucho &#8211; Huancayo (\u00e0 la fin). <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Much improved later route monte ensuite sur un haut plateau qui se trouve \u00e0 une altitude de 4200 m\u00e8tres. Peu apr\u00e8s le village de <b>Junin<\/b>, nous d\u00e9couvrons le lac <b>Chinchaycocha<\/b> qui se trouve \u00eatre la plus grand lac enti\u00e8rement p\u00e9ruvien. C\u2019est aussi une r\u00e9serve naturelle qui est un lieu de passage des oiseaux migrateurs.<br \/>\nNous d\u00e9cidons de nous y arr\u00eater pour passer la nuit, seuls au monde car cet endroit n\u2019est absolument pas touristique. Spectaculaire !<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i>In <strong>Huraz<\/strong>, our first hike leads us to <strong>Laguna 69<\/strong>. We climb 700m to get to the glacier lake at 4600m. Doesn\u2019t sound much but it takes us 2h45 and we need the full volume of our lungs to provide sufficient oxygen for our body.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>La laguna 69<\/strong><br \/>\n<a c\u2019est sur <b>la Laguna Rajucolta<\/b> que nous jetons notre d\u00e9volu.<br \/>\n5km apr\u00e8s Huaraz, nous empruntons une piste sur une quinzaine de kilom\u00e8tres avant d\u2019entamer notre marche vers la lagune.<br \/>\nNous l\u2019atteignons apr\u00e8s un peu plus de 8km de marche et 300 m\u00e8tres de d\u00e9nivel\u00e9.<br \/>\nElle se trouve directement au pied du glacier du <b>Huantsan<\/b> \u00e0 4300 m\u00e8tres alors que son sommet culmine \u00e0 6395 m\u00e8tres.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i>The next hike to <strong>Laguna Rajucolta<\/strong>\u00a0is d&#8217;altitude,\u00a0 fut un grand centre religieux qui a donn\u00e9 son nom \u00e0 une importante civilisation pr\u00e9colombienne :\u00a0<b>la culture de Chav\u00edn<\/b>, qui associe au culte du jaguar les repr\u00e9sentations du serpent et de l&#8217;oiseau de proie, se situe approximativement entre 1300 et 300 avant J.-C.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i>The <strong>Chavin<\/strong> <strong>temple<\/strong> was built around 800BC and is the only remaining large structure of this important <strong>pre-Inca culture<\/strong>. The visit of the temple and the related museum turn out to be excellent. Even though the site is almost 3000 years old it\u2019s unique underground tunnels, many ceramics, carved stone heads and stone carvings in relief of symbolic figures are very well maintained. They represent a gruesome mixture of animals and human attributes. The most famous piece is the <strong>Lanzon<\/strong> dagger shaped stone monolith that is still inside one of the temple tunnels!<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>In C\u2019est assez impressionnant.<br \/>\nM\u00eame sc\u00e9nario de l\u2019autre c\u00f4t\u00e9 pour la descente.<br \/>\nC\u2019est \u00e0 Carhuaz 2650m que se termine notre journ\u00e9e.<br \/>\n<i><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">To close the loop back to <strong>Huaraz<\/strong>, our route leads us over the <b>Punta Olimpica <\/b>pass<strong> at 4890m<\/strong>. At the top of the pass the road cuts through the mountain ridge very close to several glaciers. The \u201croad\u201d itself is much steeper and narrower than we had imagined and is built one lane only with no safety margin at the edge (let alone any side barrier). D\u00e9cision motiv\u00e9e par le fait que le premier tron\u00e7on de piste qui va \u00e0 Cajamarca n\u2019est pas praticable, car il n\u2019a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 entretenu depuis les derni\u00e8res pluies.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>After This tour, we decide to speed up our way to <strong>Equador<\/strong> and cross over the <strong>Cordillera Negra<\/strong> to the faster costal road. Instead of 10 more days\u00a0on winding mountain roads we will be at the border within 3 days.<br \/>\nOn the way to the coast the change in scenery and climate is massive. From relatively green Mountain vegetation and temperate to cold climate we now drive through very dry rugged mountains, desert dunes and along sandy beaches, interrupted by oasis like plantations of Mangos and Asparagus (now we know where the Asparagus comes from that gets into CH in January!). Temperatures here are hot during the day and mild during the night. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>De Huaraz, nous passons la Cordillera Negra par un col \u00e0 4100m avant de descendre sur <strong>Casma<\/strong> qui se trouve au bord de l\u2019Oc\u00e9an Pacifique.<br \/>\nUne dizaine de kilom\u00e8tres en direction du nord et nous nous trouvons \u00e0 <strong>Tortugas<\/strong>, petit village de vacances en bord de mer.<br \/>\nNous sommes en pleine saison morte et le village est \u00e0 95% abandonn\u00e9. Seul quelques p\u00eacheurs s\u2019activent dans leurs barques.<br \/>\nNous trouvons toutefois un restaurant ouvert dont la tenanci\u00e8re se met aux fourneaux pour nous concocter une tortilla aux gambas et un rizotto aux fruits de mer.<br \/>\nNous sommes ses seuls clients du jour et nous mangeons de bon app\u00e9tit sur la jolie terrasse du restaurant en front de mer.<br \/>\nL\u2019Azala\u00ef est parqu\u00e9 juste devant et un sommeil berc\u00e9 par la bruit du ressac nous attend.<i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i>We spend the first night very pleasantly directly at the beach in <strong>Tortugas<\/strong>, a little holiday village right in the middle of the low season.
