DE CUSCO A L\u2019EQUATEUR <\/b><\/span>–<\/b> From CUSCO to ECUADOR<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Dans ce nouvel article, nous vous faisons d\u00e9couvrir d\u2019abord la route qui m\u00e8ne de Cusco \u00e0 Huaras<\/b> en longeant les Andes p\u00e9ruviennes.
\nNous choisissons cette route pour y d\u00e9couvrir les villages andins et la nature montagneuse de cette partie du Pays.
\nNous d\u00e9couvrons ensuite depuis Huaraz<\/b>, le domaine de la Cordillera Blanca<\/b>, paradis des randonneurs du monde entier.
\nLongue de 180 km, on y trouve 663 glaciers, 269 lacs et 41 rivi\u00e8res et dont le plus haut sommet des tropiques, le Huascaran<\/b> qui culmine \u00e0 6768 m\u00e8tres.
\nNous continuons ensuite notre route jusqu’\u00e0 la fronti\u00e8re Equatorienne.<\/p>\n

In this episode, you will read how we make our way from Cusco<\/b> through Peru\u2019s<\/b> Andes<\/b> to get to Huaraz (<\/b>950km north east), and then explore Peru\u2019s hiking paradise the Cordillera Blanca<\/b>, a mountain range of 180km length with 663 glaciers, 269 lakes, 41 rivers and the highest mountain in the tropics: the Huascaran<\/b> with 6768m (no we did not try to climb it, but it is very beautiful from below too<\/i>. We then make our way through the north of Peru to get to Ecuador.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Au d\u00e9part de Cusco<\/b>, nous prenons la direction d\u2019Abancay<\/b>.
\nNous effectuons un parcours de montagnes russes, la route passant par des cols de plus de 4000 m\u00e8tres et descendant chaque fois aux alentours de 2500. Mauvaise synchronisation aujourd\u2019hui, puisque au lieu de dormir au chaud \u00e0 2500 m\u00e8tres, la nuit nous surprend presque au sommet d\u2019un col \u00e0 3900 m\u00e8tres.
\nLa vue y est magnifique. Il y fait juste un peu frais avec un z\u00e9ro degr\u00e9 au petit matin.<\/p>\n

To get from Cusco to the Cordillera Blanca<\/strong> (<\/b>950km north east), rather than take the quicker route along the pacific, we decide to drive through the Andes. We know it will be longer, since the conditions of the roads are not good (almost all dirt road) and vey winding with passes of over 4000m and valleys at around 2000m. But it will allow us to discover the beauty of the region as well as the Andean population and several cities that played an important role in Peru\u2019s history.
\nJust for comparison, the \u201cRoute des Grandes Alpes\u201d from Lake Geneva to Marseille right through the Alps is around 650km long, the road is fully paves and the highest point is just above 3000m if I remember rightly\u2026<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

July\u00a0<\/span>9 (day 96 of our travel) we take off direction north-east from Cusco to Abancay<\/b> and start climbing up and down across\u00a0<\/span> the mountains. With the difficult road conditions (steep, very exposed and winding)\u00a0<\/span>and crazy track drivers, we don\u2019t drive in the dark which leads us to spend the\u00a0<\/span>first night right at a pass of 3900m with beautiful views, and temperature\u00a0<\/span>around 0\u00b0 in the morning\u2026\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><\/i><\/p>\n

Partis t\u00f4t de notre campement d\u2019altitude, nous sommes tr\u00e8s vite arr\u00eat\u00e9s par un chantier sur la route d\u2019Ayacucho. La route s\u2019est maintenant transform\u00e9e en piste et surtout en une zone de travaux de plus de 200km. Nous d\u00e9couvrons qu\u2019il est seulement possible de passer entre midi et 13h30. Il est 09h30 lorsque nous arrivons sur la premi\u00e8re barri\u00e8re.
\nIl ne nous reste plus qu\u2019\u00e0 nous installer confortablement dans l\u2019Azala\u00ef en attendant de pouvoir continuer la route.
\nL\u2019apr\u00e8s-midi, nous continuons les montagnes russes avec des cols \u00e0 plus de 4000 m\u00e8tres et \u00e0 nouveau, nous sommes \u00e0 3800 m\u00e8tres lorsque vient le moment de s\u2019arr\u00eater.<\/p>\n

The next morning we start early to make headway, but are soon stopped by an important road construction of 200km length that allows traffic only to pass between 12:00 and 13:30. It is 9:30 in the morning\u2026<\/span>
\n Fortunately we are well equipped, pull out our books and install ourselves comfortably for the next hours. We continue our road in the afternoon and again are at a pass of 3800m just before nightfall\u2026<\/span> <\/i><\/p>\n

\nApr\u00e8s avoir parcouru quelques kilom\u00e8tres et avoir franchi le col que nous avions commenc\u00e9 hier, un nouveau chantier nous arr\u00eate.
\nCette fois, il est 10 heures quand nous arrivons devant la route barr\u00e9e et il va falloir attendre \u00e0 nouveau jusqu\u2019\u00e0 midi pour pouvoir continuer et enfin peut \u00eatre atteindre Ayacucho<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Petite pause\u00a0pique-nique en cours de route. Lunch break:<\/span>

A quatre heures, il reste 30km \u00e0 effectuer. On se dit qu\u2019il n\u2019y pas de probl\u00e8me pour y arriver de jour. Eh bien, c\u2019est sans compter les nombreuses \u00ab\u00a0Gibas\u00a0\u00bb (bosses) ralentisseurs de trafic qui pars\u00e8ment la route et devant lesquelles nous devons quasi nous arr\u00eater \u00e0 chaque fois.
\nUne autre surprise nous attend \u00e0 10km du but encore sous la forme d\u2019un chantier qui bloque une fois de plus la route. Apr\u00e8s une heure d\u2019attente, nous pouvons finalement\u00a0passer.
\nLa nuit est tomb\u00e9e\u00a0!
\nNous finissons le parcours et entrons enfin dans Ayacucho.<\/b>
\nLa circulation y est d\u00e9j\u00e0 difficile de jour mais de nuit, il faut \u00eatre courageux et tr\u00e8s vigilant.
\nPour finir cette journ\u00e9e en beaut\u00e9, les coordonn\u00e9es que nous avons pour un hostal avec parking qui accepte les camping-cars ne correspondent \u00e0 rien.
\nNous finissons par nous rabattre sur le guide Footprint et choisissons de passer la nuit \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00f4tel avec l\u2019Azala\u00ef devant notre porte.
\nIl nous aura fallu 3 jours pour parcourir 550km.<\/p>\n

The next day, same scenario, this time we are stopped by a road construction at 10:00 in the morning. We continue a good bit during lunch break opening of the blockage, but are not able to make it through the whole length of the constriction. So we try to make it to Ayacucho<\/b>, our next destination, via an alternative road (more a path than a road, average speed < 15km\/h, but beautiful with great views!). We get back to the main road at 4:00 pm and the remaining 30km should be easily done in 1hr and we will get into town with daylight. Not quite\u2026\u00a0 with a new road construction and a very bumpy detour we get into town around 19:00 (we are close to the equator and night fall is around 18:00). Driving in a busy town in Peru is an experience and at night even more so (not sure if any rules apply here at all\u2026) and we finally find a hotel with an appropriate parking for the Azalai at 20:00. We are exhausted and finish the day appropriately with an excellent Pisco Sour!
\nSo far it took us 3 full days to progress 550km\u2026 but hey, this is Latin America. The country is beautiful, the people are very friendly and for the rest it is better not to be in a hurry <\/i>J<\/i><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

The next days continue in similar style from Ayacucho <\/b>to Huancayo <\/b>and Huanta<\/b> with changing road condition, beautiful scenery and regular road constructions.<\/span>
\nNow more and more used to the \u201cLatino way\u201d and Andean road conditions (after the rainy season almost all Aden roads are interrupted by mud and rock slides and repair works go on through all the dry season\u2026), we profit from the stops to chat with the cars in front and behind and ask track drivers for the conditions of the road ahead and snack from little stands that appear miraculously next to every forced stop we experience.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

With this, we get into Huaraz and the Cordillera Blanca after 8 full days and are looking forward to change from driving to a little bit of hiking.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nous partons \u00e0 midi en direction de Huancayo<\/b>.
\nLe d\u00e9but du trajet s\u2019effectue sur une route goudronn\u00e9e mais depuis Huanta<\/b>, nous avons droit \u00e0 une piste tr\u00e8s tourment\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

Cela va s\u2019am\u00e9liorer au bout d\u2019une dizaine de km pour devenir ce qu\u2019ils appellent du ripio. On y roule \u00e0 25km\/h de moyenne.
\n30km plus tard, \u00e0 notre grande satisfaction, c\u2019est une magnifique mais tr\u00e8s \u00e9troite route goudronn\u00e9e qui serpente tout au long du Rio Mantaro<\/b> qui nous permet d\u2019avancer correctement.<\/p>\n

Un in\u00e9vitable chantier nous arr\u00eate \u00e0 16h30 et nous bloque jusqu\u2019\u00e0 17h30.
\nNous en profitons pour sympathiser avec les occupants de la voiture suivante, ce qui nous occupe bien pendant cette heure d\u2019attente et nous permet de pratiquer notre espagnol.
\nNous trouvons finalement un endroit au bord de la rivi\u00e8re pour y passer la nuit.<\/p>\n

Le lendemain, nous atteignons Huancayo<\/b> en milieu de journ\u00e9e.

C\u2019est maintenant en direction de Huanuco<\/b>, et \u00a0toujours en choisissant la route qui passe par le centre du P\u00e9rou que nous nous dirigeons.

La route monte ensuite sur un haut plateau qui se trouve \u00e0 une altitude de 4200 m\u00e8tres. Peu apr\u00e8s le village de Junin<\/b>, nous d\u00e9couvrons le lac Chinchaycocha<\/b> qui se trouve \u00eatre la plus grand lac enti\u00e8rement p\u00e9ruvien. C\u2019est aussi une r\u00e9serve naturelle qui est un lieu de passage des oiseaux migrateurs.
\nNous d\u00e9cidons de nous y arr\u00eater pour passer la nuit, seuls au monde car cet endroit n\u2019est absolument pas touristique. De plus, il se trouve aussi \u00e0 4200 m\u00e8tres d\u2019altitude, ce qui, comme nous sommes au milieu de l\u2019hiver, nous promet une nuit plut\u00f4t fraiche.<\/p>\n

Le 17 juillet, 105\u00e8me<\/sup> jour de notre voyage, nous atteignons Huaraz<\/b>.

D\u00e8s notre arriv\u00e9e, nous organisons notre premi\u00e8re randonn\u00e9e dans la Cordillera Blanca.

\nIl nous faut 3h30 de route dont 1h40 de piste avant d\u2019atteindre le lieu de d\u00e9part de la rando.
\nApr\u00e8s 2h45 de marche et 700 m\u00e8tres de d\u00e9nivel\u00e9, nous atteignons la lagune qui se trouve \u00e0 4600 m\u00e8tre d\u2019altitude, directement au pied d\u2019un glacier. Spectaculaire !<\/p>\n

In Huraz<\/strong>, our first hike leads us to Laguna 69<\/strong>. We climb 700m to get to the glacier lake at 4600m. Doesn\u2019t sound much but it takes us 2h45 and we need the full volume of our lungs to provide sufficient oxygen for our body.

Le lendemain, c\u2019est sur la Laguna Rajucolta<\/b> que nous jetons notre d\u00e9volu.
\n5km apr\u00e8s Huaraz, nous empruntons une piste sur une quinzaine de kilom\u00e8tres avant d\u2019entamer notre marche vers la lagune.
\nNous l\u2019atteignons apr\u00e8s un peu plus de 8km de marche et 300 m\u00e8tres de d\u00e9nivel\u00e9.
\nElle se trouve directement au pied du glacier du Huantsan<\/b> \u00e0 4300 m\u00e8tres alors que son sommet culmine \u00e0 6395 m\u00e8tres.<\/p>\n

The next hike to Laguna Rajucolta<\/strong>\u00a0is easy but equally beautiful. 16km round trip with only\u00a0300m altitude increase\u00a0to a glacier and lake at 4300m.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s ces deux journ\u00e9es, nous nous octroyons un jour de repos \u00e0 Huaraz<\/strong> avant d\u2019entamer un tour de la Cordillera Blanca.
\nMais non! pas \u00e0 pied mais avec l\u2019Azala\u00ef bien s\u00fbr.<\/p>\n

After several days in the\u00a0<\/span>area of Huaraz, we take off for a tour through the Cordillera Blanca to visit the\u00a0<\/span>Chavin<\/b> fortress temple<\/b>, one of the most important the pre-Inca ruins, and also discover more of the spectacular views of the area.<\/span> <\/i><\/p>\n

\nLe village\u00a0de\u00a0Chav\u00edn de Huantar<\/b>, nich\u00e9\u00a0\u00e0 3500 m d’altitude,\u00a0 fut un grand centre religieux qui a donn\u00e9 son nom \u00e0 une importante civilisation pr\u00e9colombienne :\u00a0la culture de Chav\u00edn<\/b>, qui associe au culte du jaguar les repr\u00e9sentations du serpent et de l’oiseau de proie, se situe approximativement entre 1300 et 300 avant J.-C.<\/p>\n

The Chavin<\/strong> temple<\/strong> was built around 800BC and is the only remaining large structure of this important pre-Inca culture<\/strong>. The visit of the temple and the related museum turn out to be excellent. Even though the site is almost 3000 years old it\u2019s unique underground tunnels, many ceramics, carved stone heads and stone carvings in relief of symbolic figures are very well maintained. They represent a gruesome mixture of animals and human attributes. The most famous piece is the Lanzon<\/strong> dagger shaped stone monolith that is still inside one of the temple tunnels!<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, the head of the museum<\/em> <\/span>Marcela Olivas Weston<\/b><\/em><\/span> <\/b>has visited Switzerland several times and also organised the latest <\/span>Chavin expositon in Z\u00fcrich and we have the pleasure to receive a personalised <\/span>tour of the beautiful museum in French!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\nNous nous plaisons beaucoup \u00e0 cet endroit et d\u00e9cidons de rester un jour de plus.

Il va falloir pour cela passer un col, le Punta Olimpica \u00e0 4890m d\u2019altitude.
\nAu d\u00e9but, c\u2019est une magnifique route goudronn\u00e9e qui nous y emm\u00e8ne gentiment.
\nCependant, d\u00e8s 4000m, c\u2019est une piste tr\u00e8s caillouteuse et abrupte qui nous am\u00e8ne au col qui se faufile entre deux glaciers. C\u2019est assez impressionnant.

\nC\u2019est \u00e0 Carhuaz 2650m que se termine notre journ\u00e9e.

\nTo close the loop back to Huaraz<\/strong>, our route leads us over the Punta Olimpica <\/b>pass at 4890m<\/strong>. At the top of the pass the road cuts through the mountain ridge very close to several glaciers. The \u201croad\u201d itself is much steeper and narrower than we had imagined and is built one lane only with no safety margin at the edge (let alone any side barrier). But our Azalai and Michel are reliable as ever and drive safely through this for me rather frightening part of our journey\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

A partir d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui, 25 juillet, nous d\u00e9cidons de quitter la route qui passe par les Andes et de passer par la c\u00f4te pour monter en Equateur. D\u00e9cision motiv\u00e9e par le fait que le premier tron\u00e7on de piste qui va \u00e0 Cajamarca n\u2019est pas praticable, car il n\u2019a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 entretenu depuis les derni\u00e8res pluies.<\/p>\n

After This tour, we decide to speed up our way to Equador<\/strong> and cross over the Cordillera Negra<\/strong> to the faster costal road. Instead of 10 more days\u00a0on winding mountain roads we will be at the border within 3 days.
\nOn the way to the coast the change in scenery and climate is massive. From relatively green Mountain vegetation and temperate to cold climate we now drive through very dry rugged mountains, desert dunes and along sandy beaches, interrupted by oasis like plantations of Mangos and Asparagus (now we know where the Asparagus comes from that gets into CH in January!). Temperatures here are hot during the day and mild during the night. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\nUne dizaine de kilom\u00e8tres en direction du nord et nous nous trouvons \u00e0 Tortugas<\/strong>, petit village de vacances en bord de mer.
\nNous sommes en pleine saison morte et le village est \u00e0 95% abandonn\u00e9. Seul quelques p\u00eacheurs s\u2019activent dans leurs barques.
\nNous trouvons toutefois un restaurant ouvert dont la tenanci\u00e8re se met aux fourneaux pour nous concocter une tortilla aux gambas et un rizotto aux fruits de mer.
\nNous sommes ses seuls clients du jour et nous mangeons de bon app\u00e9tit sur la jolie terrasse du restaurant en front de mer.
\nL\u2019Azala\u00ef est parqu\u00e9 juste devant et un sommeil berc\u00e9 par la bruit du ressac nous attend.<\/i><\/p>\n

We spend the first night very pleasantly directly at the beach in Tortugas<\/strong>, a little holiday village right in the middle of the low season. People are very friendly and relaxed. We dine with view on the Pacific<\/strong> on the veranda of a little fish restaurant where we are the only guests for the day. Tortilla with gambas for me and Sea Food Rizotto for Michel. What a change!<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

De l\u00e0, nous passons ensuite par Chimbote, Trujillo, Piura et Sullana<\/strong> avant de passer la fronti\u00e8re avec l\u2019Equateur le 28 juillet \u00e0 La Tina\/Macara<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

From there we drive two more days direction north along the coast via Chimbote, Trujillo, Piura<\/strong> and Sullana<\/strong>. We enter Ecuador<\/strong> on July 28 at the border of Tina\/Macara<\/strong> and continue direction Vilcabamba<\/strong> and the national park Podocarpus<\/strong>. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n
