Lundi 10 juin We now start the last part of our Namibia visit north east of Windhoek. The Erongo mountains<\/strong> <\/span>are known for their intensely reddish and surprising round rock formations.<\/span><\/p>\n We stay at the Ameib farm<\/strong> that is part of the Erongo mountain nature sanctuary. From here we do several mall hikes.<\/span><\/p>\n Nous commen\u00e7ons la journ\u00e9e par une randonn\u00e9e \u00e0 la \u00ab Philipp\u2019s Cave <\/b>\u00bb.<\/p>\n 1500 ans avant JC, cette r\u00e9gion \u00e9tait aussi occup\u00e9e par le peuple San<\/b> et les grottes formaient des endroits id\u00e9aux pour leurs c\u00e9r\u00e9monies sacr\u00e9es.<\/p>\n The Philippe\u2019s Cave<\/strong> which was used by the Bushmen 1500 bc<\/strong> for sacred ceremonies. The actual volcano crater is eroded now. So a bit like a coffee without the cup around it<\/span> 😉<\/p>\n The \u201cGrosse Spitzkoppe<\/strong>\u201d elevates up to 1728m and is called Namibian Matterhorn due to a resembling shape from a distance (it really looks alike from a far distance, we just don\u2019t have a photo 😟).<\/span><\/p>\n L\u2019endroit le plus remarquable du cirque est repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 par cette magnifique arche en granit.<\/p>\n The most remarkable at this site is this natural arch. And if you take the photo from the right side you even see the Grosse Spitzkoppe on the other side!<\/span><\/p>\n Jeudi 13 juin Les porc-\u00e9pics sont extr\u00eamement difficiles \u00e0 observer \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tat sauvage car ce sont des animaux nocturnes.<\/p>\n Dans ce camp, Katrin <\/b>la propri\u00e9taire, avec l\u2019aide de sa fille, a mis 5 ans \u00e0 amener les porc-\u00e9pics de la r\u00e9gion \u00e0 venir se restaurer au cr\u00e9puscule au pied de son restaurant.<\/p>\n Elle a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 leur poser de la nourriture tous les soirs \u00e0 la m\u00eame heure \u00e0 une centaine de m\u00e8tres de l\u00e0 et progressivement a rapproch\u00e9 le festin jusqu\u2019\u00e0 pouvoir les faire venir \u00e0 la porte de son restaurant sans que les animaux soient effray\u00e9s par la pr\u00e9sence humaine.<\/p>\n From here we continue north direction Epupa falls at the Angolan boarder. Our next stop is the Porcupine Camp<\/strong> where Kathrin the owner feeds wild porcupines every evening. <\/span>These animals are a very rare sight since they are night active and rather shy. It took Kathrin 5 years to get them used to the feeding.<\/span><\/p>\n In the evening we admire the animals with their impressively raised spines. Kathrin explains that each area of the body has different spines with different functions. <\/span><\/span>For example: when a porcupine is chased by a lion and it feels that the lion is coming very close it will suddenly stop and at the same time rise the particularly thick and rigid back spines. The lion will run right into these spines that will penetrate deeply into its skin and then break off. It is likely that the lion will later die from an infection these spines will cause!<\/span><\/p>\n What an Interesting tactic developed through evolution!<\/span><\/p>\n Tout cela sous la surveillance d’un jeune Calao qui attend son moment pour profiter des restes du festin.<\/p>\n A South African Hornbill<\/strong> is waiting for its turn to feed on the cooked white maize.<\/span><\/p>\n Vendredi 14 juin Le parcours est parsem\u00e9 de petits villages, constitu\u00e9s de maisons dont les murs sont faits de branchages recouverts de terre.<\/p>\n Along our road further north we pass many little villages with wood or clay built huts. <\/span>Even though plastic bags and waist disposal is also a problem here, the big majority of the communities keeps their places very clean. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Samedi 15 juin A l\u2019origine, ces deux peuples sont de la m\u00eame origine et sont tous deux gardiens de troupeaux.<\/p>\n Durant l\u2019occupation allemande, une fraction de ceux-ci, les Hereros,<\/b> furent fortement christianis\u00e9s et influenc\u00e9s par ceux-ci, \u00e0 tel point que les femmes on m\u00eame adopt\u00e9 une tenue victorienne (grande robe et chapeau), pas du tout adapt\u00e9e au climat local.<\/p>\n We enter the region of the Herero<\/strong> and Ovahimba<\/strong> tribes both originally and still mostly shepherds for goats and cattle.<\/span><\/p>\n Whereas the Ovahimbas have kept their traditional out fit, including the paste of red soil and animal fat that covers the skin as sun protection, the Hereros have adopted to European long dress and Victorian hat when they where christianized by German missionaries late 18 hundred. 🤨<\/span> Les Ovahimba<\/b> de leur c\u00f4t\u00e9 ont gard\u00e9 leur tenue d\u2019origine (simple pagne autour de la taille et panoplie de bijoux) avec la totalit\u00e9 du corps recouverte d\u2019une teinture ocre leur donnant cet aspect tr\u00e8s particulier. The leather headdress<\/strong> of this lady indicates that she is married.<\/span><\/p>\n Un peu d’histoire:<\/strong> Afin de survivre, ils se sont retourn\u00e9s vers leurs voisins Herero <\/b>en qu\u00eate de nourriture et c\u2019est ainsi qu\u2019il ont \u00e9t\u00e9 baptis\u00e9s \u00ab Himba<\/b> \u00bb qui traduit en langage Herero signifie \u00ab mendiant \u00bb.<\/p>\n Aujourd\u2019hui encore, leur appellation n\u2019a pas chang\u00e9, car ils ont gard\u00e9 cette habitude de mendier.<\/p>\n Alors que nous nous dirigeons vers Opuwo, nous passons juste \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 d\u2019un village Ovahimba <\/b>et ne pouvons r\u00e9sister \u00e0 la tentation de les rencontrer une nouvelle fois.<\/p>\n Nous essayons d\u2019\u00e9tablir le dialogue, ce qui s\u2019av\u00e8re tr\u00e8s difficile car aucun d\u2019eux ne parle l\u2019anglais ni d\u2019autre langue de notre connaissance.<\/p>\n C\u2019est donc \u00e0 force de gestes que nous communiquons et que nous passons ainsi quelques moments pr\u00e9cieux en leur sympathique compagnie.<\/p>\n We stop at an Ovahimba village<\/strong> to learn more about their live today. We are welcomed with gestures and mimics but unfortunately nobody speaks English and we cannot communicate together. So we leave again with slight regret on both sides.<\/span><\/p>\n But we do buy a hand carved rhino. Whites are very much the exception. Here traditional Himba and Herero outfit mix with the modern background of supermarkets and petrol stations. At the checkout during our shopping we are visibly the \u201cwhite exception\u201d. With view onto the infinity pool and the mountains Michel works on our blog and I enjoy a good cup of coffee 😁<\/span><\/p>\n Endroit id\u00e9al pour \u00e9crire un petit bout du blog. Dimanche 16 juin Le spectacle est parait-il impressionnant de voir ses eaux tumultueuses se jeter dans le fond de la gorge aux roches escarp\u00e9es.<\/p>\n Toutefois, lorsque nous arrivons sur le site, nous devons nous rendre \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9vidence que ce fleuve majestueux paye un lourd tribut \u00e0 la plus grande s\u00e9cheresse de ces derni\u00e8res 120 ann\u00e9es qui s\u00e9vit actuellement sur la Namibie<\/b>.<\/p>\n Nous devons nous contenter d\u2019un petit filet d\u2019eau laissant \u00e0 nu le lit du fleuve qui nous offre tout de m\u00eame un joli spectacle de roches refl\u00e9tant les rayons orang\u00e9s d\u2019un soleil couchant.<\/p>\n Today we need 4.5 hours to drive the 240 km that still separate us from the Kunene<\/strong> river and the Opua Falls<\/strong>. The river is here the natural border between Namibia and Angola and when the water is low you can easily walk across. There is no fence or watch tower, but once in a while there is a bridge that functions as official border crossing.<\/span><\/p>\n Namibia is experiencing the biggest drought since over 100 years<\/strong> and instead of a roaring, large <\/span>waterfall we see a mostly dry river bed with a small waterfall in the middle. <\/span>Too bad. 😟 <\/span>We also think of the numerous cattle farmers in Namibia that have to kill many of their cows <\/span>now to be able to find enough food for the others, hoping that the rain will come already in October and not only in Jan or Feb. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n A cette latitude, nous rencontrons aussi nos premiers grands baobabs<\/b>\u2026.<\/p>\n The milder weather in the north allows the growth of Baobabs<\/strong>. So impressive 😲<\/span><\/p>\n \u2026..au sommet desquels on peut surprendre quelques fois un aigle serpentaire <\/span>en recherche de proie.<\/p>\n And in one of them a Snake Eagle<\/strong>!<\/span><\/p>\n Lundi 17 juin Une petite visite \u00e0 celles-ci nous montrent qu\u2019elles n\u2019ont m\u00eame pas un filet d\u2019eau \u00e0 nous offrir en spectacle 😟 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n We now turn east and continue along the Kunene river the Ruacana<\/strong> Falls<\/strong> that are even dryer!<\/span><\/p>\n Le long de la piste, enfants et m\u00eame adultes Ovahimbas<\/b> mendient quelque chose \u00e0 manger.<\/p>\n On ne peut pas tous les satisfaire mais de temps \u00e0 autre quelques fruits offerts \u00e9clairent leur visage d\u2019un sourire reconnaissant.<\/p>\n On the way we sometimes give fruits to the locals that beg for food. The drought is also very hard on them and we don\u2019t really know how they manage. Although somehow it seems to work since none of them looks really malnourished to us. The camp site is pleasantly shady and the deck of the bar\/restaurant sits right over the river!<\/span><\/p>\n Soir\u00e9e restaurant avec ap\u00e9ro coucher de soleil sur la terrasse de celui-ci.<\/p>\n Ok, we don\u2019t cook and get installed for a romantic sundowner and dinner 😍<\/span><\/p>\n Mardi 18 juin Breakfast with view over the river and with company<\/span> 😊<\/p>\n \u2026.et aussi ce petit tisserand qui pousse m\u00eame le culot de venir se servir dans le bol.<\/p>\n La lodge dispose de quelques canoes <\/b>nous offrant ce matin l\u2019opportunit\u00e9 de nous <\/span>laisser emporter par le paisible courant de la Kunene<\/b>, \u00e0 la d\u00e9couverte de ses berges arbor\u00e9es, abritant une multitude d\u2019oiseaux dont le chant exotique nous accompagne tout au long du parcours.<\/p>\n Right afterwords we hire a canoe<\/strong>. The crocodiles and hippos are not interested in canoes we are told. With this the housing changes and the locals wear modern clothes.<\/span><\/p>\n Arriv\u00e9s en fin d\u2019apr\u00e8s-midi \u00e0 Oshakati<\/b> nous nous rendons \u00e0 la \u00ab Seven Valley Guest house \u00bb<\/b> pour passer la nuit.<\/p>\n Jeudi 20 juin Nous d\u00e9cidons de partager la poire en deux et trouvons \u00e0 mi-chemin la communaut\u00e9 agricole d\u2019Okongo<\/b> o\u00f9 poules et pintades nous tiennent compagnie pour la fin de la journ\u00e9e.<\/p>\n We spend the night at the Okongo<\/strong> campground. It is a so called community campground<\/strong> that belongs to a village. They are run by black people whereas the lodges are usually run by white Namibians. The set-up is in general very basic (with toilets but rarely with shower) but we like them because you get in contact with the locals and they feel more authentic.<\/span><\/p>\n Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une pluviom\u00e9trie plus abondante dans le Nord\/Est du pays, la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation y est plus abondante et il est possible de faucher l\u2019herbe jaunie en vue de pouvoir nourrir le b\u00e9tail en saison s\u00e8che mais aussi de la vendre \u00e0 ceux qui plus au sud ne disposent pas de la chance d’en avoir.<\/p>\n In southern Africa the climate changes<\/strong> from very dry in the west (Namibia) to very wet in the east (Mozambique). We start to see the change now. There are all sorts of shops along one road, a few petrol stations and a local market. Thats it. Le quartier des salons de coiffure.<\/p>\n En fin d\u2019apr\u00e8s-midi, nous nous rendons \u00e0 la Kaisori River Lodge <\/b>pour y passer la nuit mais la r\u00e9ceptionniste nous annonce que ce ne sera pas possible, toutes les places \u00e9tant occup\u00e9es.<\/p>\n Pas de souci, on se rabat sur le Camp Hogo <\/b>qui se trouve juste \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 et qui lui nous accueille avec grand plaisir.<\/p>\n C\u2019est au bord de la rivi\u00e8re Kavango<\/b> que nous prenons notre Gin-Tonic, en admirant les couleurs \u00e9voluant au gr\u00e9 du coucher de soleil.<\/p>\n Close by we find a lovely campground right at the Kavango river: Camp Hugo<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n Samedi 22 juin Breakfast with a view.<\/span><\/p>\n …..avant d’aller faire un petit tour dans la ville de Rundu <\/b>pour nous impr\u00e9gner de la vie locale.<\/p>\n Another tour through Rundu for the atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n Passage au march\u00e9 couvert o\u00f9 se m\u00e9langent tissus, farine, f\u00e9culents et artisans.<\/p>\n I even get a bit too much of the atmosphere when three young guys bump into me and I realize immediately that my iPhone is gone<\/strong>. <\/span>Not much to visit for us but a good place to stock-up on food. In particular fresh veggies and fruits are not really available in smaller towns.
