We have chosen an alternative road to avoid masses of tourists that access the site from Cusco via the train (we are in the high season). Unfortunately we cannot walk the 4 days Inca trail (the trail is now restricted to 200 people a day and reservations need to be made 6 Months ahead!), but the solution we found works out great for us. It allows us to first visit the “Valle Sagrado” and its impressive archaeological sites, then drive over a beautiful mountain pass at 4300m and then access the Machu Picchu village (called again Aguas Callientes…) and the site via a 12km hike. The landscape along the road is again fantastic and we stop over in remote and amazing places. The whole tour takes us 6 days and we enjoy all of it!

Terrasses de Pisac. Picsa an important Inca site in the Valle Sagrado:

Ollantaytambo (2850m), and important Inca forteress at the end of the Valle Sagrado, and also a lovely little village with a mixture of Inca and colonial style houses, roads and plaza:

Hot tub at the campsite in St Theresa (1200m).
