It is a stunning and beautiful trip,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">but unfortunately with the altitude comes the cold, and even more so since we<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">are in winter here, which is dryer and thus the better season for us. So we<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">will start with +5\u00b0C \/ +20 \u00b0C at <strong>Sucre<\/strong> and go to -15\u00b0C \/ +08\u00b0C \u00e0 5000 m\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>On commence par une image de l&#8217;itin\u00e9raire suivi. <em><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">Here the itinerary:<\/span><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/milke.fr\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/De-Sucre-%C3%A0-La-Paz.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-443\" alt=\"De Sucre \u00e0 La Paz\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/milke.fr\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/De-Sucre-%C3%A0-La-Paz.jpg?resize=584%2C779&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"584\" height=\"779\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/milke.fr\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/De-Sucre-%C3%A0-La-Paz.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/milke.fr\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/De-Sucre-%C3%A0-La-Paz.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nous voil\u00e0 partis de <strong>Sucre<\/strong> en direction de <b>Potosi<\/b>.<br \/>\nNous arrivons en fin d\u2019apr\u00e8s-midi et commen\u00e7ons \u00e0 chercher un endroit pour parquer l\u2019Azala\u00ef.<br \/>\nNous tournons en rond un moment avant de nous arr\u00eater\u00a0pour r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir.<br \/>\nC\u2019est alors qu\u2019une dame tape \u00e0 la vitre et nous demande si elle peut nous aider.<br \/>\nElle nous propose en fait de parquer le v\u00e9hicule dans la cour de sa maison, en toute s\u00e9curit\u00e9.<br \/>\nNous acceptons et nous rendons dans sa propri\u00e9t\u00e9 et faisons plus ample connaissance.<br \/>\nElle s\u2019appelle <strong>Selene<\/strong> et est avocate et l\u2019un de ses amis travaille dans la croix rouge Suisse.<br \/>\nAyant vu nos plaques et notre man\u00e8ge, elle a eu envie de nous aider.<br \/>\n<i><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">Our first stop after Sucre is Potosi, a colonial style town with many beautiful old churches and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">buildings and very narrow cobblestone roads and super heavy traffic that make it very hard for us to navigate and find a parking, let alone a hotel. After going around in circles for a while we stop to rethink our approach and are surprised by a woman that comes to our car and askes whether she can help, and in case we are looking for a parking we could leave the car in her property close to where we are now. Unbelievable, no? Why would she do this? Has anyone ever offered this to you in a town where you don\u2019t know anybody?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">Selene does explain that she has seen the Swiss licence plate and that she has friends that work in the Suisse Read Cross and she had a Swiss exchange student stay with her for a year. Still amazing and we both decide back in CH we should do the same.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">Anyway, we accept the great offer and over the next days in Potosi she and her family help us with various things and we spend some great time together.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<\/i><b><br \/>\nPotosi<\/b> est une ville mini\u00e8re situ\u00e9\u00a0\u00e0 4000 m\u00e8tres\/mer,\u00a0au pied\u00a0d\u2019une montagne appel\u00e9e<br \/>\n\u00ab\u00a0<b>Cerro Rico\u00a0\u00bb<\/b>, truff\u00e9e de galeries de mines, encore en exploitation aujourd\u2019hui.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><i><strong>Potosi<\/strong> is a miner town at 4000m over sea, created around 1500 by the Spanish to extract during<br \/>\nseveral centuries huge amounts of silver from the &#8220;<strong>Cerro Rico&#8221;<\/strong>, a big mountain right next to the town. Nous acceptons avec plaisir.<br \/>\nElle appartient en fait \u00e0 son p\u00e8re qui se met de bon c\u0153ur \u00e0 notre disposition pour une visite guid\u00e9e\u00a0de son usine des plus int\u00e9ressantes.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><i>Thanks again to Selene, who\u2019s father owns a \u201cmetal extraction factory\u201d we not only see the<br \/>\nmines but also how the connaissance du sujet, une visite de l&#8217;une des nombreuses concessions de mines s&#8217;impose.<br \/>\nLe lendemain, nous louons les services d\u2019une guide qui nous am\u00e8ne au <strong>Cerro RIco.<\/strong><br \/>\nPamela\u00a0(notre guide) vient nous chercher \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00f4tel pour nous amener dans un premier temps dans un d\u00e9p\u00f4t o\u00f9 nous rev\u00eatons un habit de mineur.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><i>The next day we visit one of the numerous mines with our guide Pamela.<\/i><\/span><br \/>\n<a dans un des magasins pour mineurs o\u00f9 ils s\u2019approvisionnent en feuilles de coca, d\u2019alcool de canne \u00e0 sucre \u00e0 96\u00b0, de boisson genre coca-cola, de b\u00e2tons de dynamite, de m\u00e8che et d\u00e9tonateurs ainsi que de cigarettes.<br \/>\nC\u2019est tout ce qu\u2019ils ont le droit d\u2019emporter dans la mine.<br \/>\nNous commen\u00e7ons ensuite la visite dans la mine proprement dite.<br \/>\nEntr\u00e9e dans la montagne par un couloir \u00e9troit, nous marchons courb\u00e9s jusqu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019un des emplacements o\u00f9 le minerai est extrait.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><i>After we are dressed for the mines, we visit a shop where the miner can buy all he needs during a day: coca leaves, soft drinks, 96% alcohol, cigarettes and dynamite. No food is permitted in the mines. Ca chauffe !!!<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><i>Right after the entrance, and to ensure that we leave the mine in good health we offer gifts to a statue that represents the god of the miners: coca leaves, a cigarette and we share a sip of 96% alcohol with the god\u2026 Bolivians are very superstitious and minors even more! Il faut savoir qu\u2019il n\u2019y a pas de panneaux et un entrecroisement de pistes qui nous laisse peu de chances de trouver la bonne sans un peu d\u2019aide.<br \/>\nNous nous rendons \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00f4tel Mitru dont l\u2019agence, la plus ancienne de Tupiza, a une bonne r\u00e9putation quant \u00e0 l\u2019organisation de ce genre de tours.<br \/>\nApr\u00e8s discussion, les personnes de l\u2019agence acceptent avec grande sympathie que nous accompagnions l&#8217;une de leur voiture, et ceci sans d\u00e9dommagement financier.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><i>Since no precise map of the Sud Lipez area is available and we are not able to get GPS points for orientation, we ask a tour operator if we can follow one of their jeeps (or at least try, since we don\u2019t have the same driving style\u2026). High means cold and since our heating runs with the motor diesel and we have added the anti-gelling additive a little late, the heating cuts out around midnight. The temptation to get up early in the morning and take a hot bath is too big and we decide to say good bye to our guide and stay overnight. Higher means colder, and the heating again only works half through the night. So the hot bath in the morning is divine! Comme nous l&#8217;aimons bien, nous allons acheter le m\u00eame \u00e0 La Paz.<\/p>\n<p>Avant d\u2019arriver \u00e0 <b>San Juan<\/b>.<br \/>\nNous y visiterons une n\u00e9cropole de l\u2019\u00e9poque pr\u00e9-Inca (1250 ac). La particularit\u00e9 de ce site est que toutes les tombes sont taill\u00e9es dans le corail.<br \/>\n<i><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">In San Juan where we will spend the night (luckily a little warmer since we are \u201conly\u201d at 3650m), we visit a pre-Inca cemetery (1250ac) where the graves are little caves, cut into coral riffs. It looks quite peculiar and it somehow feels as if we were walking under water. The corals are remains from when the area was a sea, a very long time ago.<\/span> <\/i><\/p>\n<p>Notre journ\u00e9e s&#8217;ach\u00e8ve \u00e0 <strong>San Juan<\/strong>, petit village situ\u00e9 \u00e0 la porte d&#8217;entr\u00e9e sud du \u00ab\u00a0<b>Salar d\u2019Uyuni\u00a0\u00bb<\/b> que nous aborderons demain.<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">The next morning we get to the \u201c<b>Salar d\u2019Uyuni\u201d, <\/b>the biggest<b> <\/b>salt flat of the world and again a remainder of the sea that once was here (160km long, 135km wide). We first have to use a secured path to get over the fragile border into the salt flat and can then drive freely on the very white surface made from a crust of salt over the actual water. The surface is from smooth to quite rough and made from an endless number of connected pentagons with about 30cm diameter, like a huge<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">white flattened beehive.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>L\u2019entr\u00e9e du <strong>Salar<\/strong> se fait par une piste en tr\u00e8s mauvais \u00e9tat.<br \/>\nHeureusement, nous pouvons assez rapidement nous rendre sur la surface de cet immense lac de sel.<br \/>\nPh\u00e9nom\u00e8ne \u00e9trange, nous avons les m\u00eames sensations qu\u2019en voilier. On navigue sur une eau blanche, sans vagues, et au loin nous apercevons\u00a0 quelques \u00eeles.<br \/>\nNous mettons le cap sur\u00a0 <b>l\u2019\u00eele Incahuasi <\/b>(faussement appel\u00e9e \u00eele Pescadora) que nous abordons par l\u2019ouest. C\u2019est le seul point qui permet d\u2019acc\u00e9der \u00e0 la \u00ab\u00a0terre ferme\u00a0\u00bb sans s\u2019enfoncer.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><i>Inside the salt flat there are a number of small islands and they seem to float on the horizon as if we were on water.<br \/>\nWe visit one of them, <b>Incahuasi<\/b>. It is a little hill that rises above the salt flat level. The rocks of the island are covered in old corals and the whole island is overgrown by and uncountable number of large cacti. Not very reinsuring given that the Azalai weighs about 3t\u2026 Although the guide book says the salt crust is 2 to 7m thick. Means<\/i> <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">inside<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">and outside thorough cleaning of the car to get rid of salt and sand, buy and add anti-gel agent for the diesel, fully re-inflate the tires for paved road conditions and hotel, hot shower and some good food with local live music for us!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Une piste y m\u00e8ne de mani\u00e8re directe mais comme nous\u00a0en avons assez de la t\u00f4le ondul\u00e9e pour le moment, nous d\u00e9cidons de repasser par Potosi et Oruro. Tron\u00e7on qui a l&#8217;avantage d&#8217;\u00eatre goudronn\u00e9.<br \/>\nNous passons la nuit dans une station-service \u00e0 Oruro (s\u00e9curit\u00e9 oblige).<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/span><br \/>\nCe matin, nous partons de l\u2019id\u00e9e qu\u2019il nous faudra 3 petites heures pour effectuer les 210 km qui nous s\u00e9parent de La Paz.<br \/>\nGRAVE ERREUR\u00a0!!!<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">For our next stop, <b>La Paz<\/b>, we decide to take the longer but paved road via Potosi. We feel like we had a little too much of dirt roads over the last days\u2026<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">In <b>Oruro<\/b>, half way to <b>La Paz<\/b>, we can\u2019t find a safe space to sleep and end up next to a petrol station that is surveyed all night. Not very romantic, but safe\u2026 <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">From <b>Oruro<\/b> we leave early next morning direction <b>La Paz<\/b>. With the remaining 210 km we estimate a 3hr drive. But since things never work the way you anticipate on South Americas roads it will take us a good part of the day. Not only have we to find a way around 3 \u201cBloqueos\u201d in Oruro (this time the minivan Taxis block the roads to indicate their unhappiness about the bad state of the roads\u2026) but also the whole road to La Paz is a super long road construction and last but not least, to drive through El Alto, a huge former suburb of La Paz (and by now an independent city with roughly 2mio inhabitants) is chaotic and very slow!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>D\u00e8s la sortie d\u2019Oruro, nous tombons sur un \u00ab\u00a0Bloqueo\u00a0\u00bb, en clair, un barrage de v\u00e9hicules.<br \/>\nCe sont les chauffeurs des petits bus de transport en commun qui marquent leur m\u00e9contentement quant \u00e0 la qualit\u00e9 des routes sur le r\u00e9seau d\u2019Oruro.<br \/>\nNous commen\u00e7ons \u00e0 discuter avec eux en leur signifiant que ce n\u2019est pas vraiment notre probl\u00e8me et apr\u00e8s 10 minutes de palabres, ils acceptent de nous laisser passer et ouvrent une br\u00e8che dans le barrage. OUF\u00a0! Nous allons pouvoir continuer.<br \/>\n<strong>Ben non\u00a0!<\/strong> 2km plus loin, re-Bloqueo. Cette fois, le barrage est si important que la n\u00e9gociation n\u2019apporterait rien.<br \/>\nComme nous disposons d\u2019un bon 4&#215;4 qui a d\u00e9montr\u00e9 ses qualit\u00e9s dans les terrains les plus difficiles, nous d\u00e9cidons de faire le tour du bloqueo par les pistes avoisinantes. Apr\u00e8s quelques dizaines de minutes de sauts et de grimp\u00e9es de talus, nous l\u2019avons pass\u00e9. Youppie\u00a0! Cette fois c\u2019est bon, penses-t \u2018on.<br \/>\n<strong>Ben c\u2019est toujours non\u00a0!<\/strong> Encore 2km plus loin, 3<sup>\u00e8me<\/sup> bloqueo.<br \/>\nComme le contournement du 2<sup>\u00e8me<\/sup> a donn\u00e9 de bons r\u00e9sultats, nous r\u00e9cidivons avec le m\u00eame bonheur pour le 3<sup>\u00e8me<\/sup>. Cette fois, c\u2019est la bonne.<br \/>\nIl reste toujours 210km \u00e0 parcourir et nous pensons toujours que 3 heures devraient maintenant suffire.<br \/>\nC&#8217;est compter sans le fait que tout le tron\u00e7on est en voie d&#8217;\u00e9largissement et que nous nous trouvons face\u00a0\u00e0 un chantier de 210 km que nous mettons 5 heures \u00e0 parcourir.<br \/>\n<i><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">We finally get to the border of <b>La Paz<\/b> and stop to enjoy the amazing view. <b>La Paz<\/b> is built inside a very steep valley and from the highest parts of the city down to some suburbs is a difference of 1000m altitude (between 3020 and 4000m). The view is topped by snow covered Mountains up to 6000m high!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">I have to check in internet to understand why the Spanish wanted to build an important city at this altitude and on such steep slopes.
